* University Choir Auditions this Week!

University Choir Auditions today, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week with openings for all voice parts.  Come to Fine Arts Room 104B to sign up for an audition.  Questions can be directed to Dr. Dennis Malfatti, Director of Choral Activities:  dm155@evansville.edu

 

Upcoming Events

* Tonight - Newman Catholic Student Center Beginning of the Year Activities

UE's Catholic campus ministry, the Newman Center, will have its annual Beginning of the Year Cookout on Wednesday, August 28 - as well as its first Wednesday night Mass to open the school year.

The cookout, open to all students, will be at the Newman Center (1901 Lincoln Avenue; just across the street from the front oval and Koch Center) from 5:00-6:45 on Wednesday. Feel free to stop by anytime to meet the campus ministry staff, other Catholic students and faculty, and enjoy some free food!

The Opening Mass will be celebrated Wednesday night at 9:30 pm in Neu Chapel, with Fr. Jeff Read presiding. He will be available for Confessions at 9:00 p.m. This Mass will include a special blessing for students and professors as we begin this school year.

* This Week in Music: Ensemble Auditions

As the new academic year begins, the Department of Music wants to welcome everyone back to campus and to alert everyone to the fact that auditions are being held this week for Department ensembles. Some notifications have already appeared in AceNotes, so please check for earlier announcements. Those interested should also check the bulletin boards in the north hall of Krannert Hall of Fine Arts (FA) for more details. Sign-up sheets are available on the respective bulletin boards, and the ensembles are open to both music majors and non-majors.

UE Jazz Ensemble Auditions will be held on Wednesday evening, August 28, from 7:00-9:30. Saxophone, trumpet, and trombone auditions will be held in the office of Professor Timothy Zifer, FA 144, while rhythm and percussion auditions will be held in the ensemble rehearsal hall, FA 110, between 8:45 and 9:30. Auditions will consist of major scales (drums will play styles), audition excerpts, and sight reading. Audition excerpts are available at

The University Symphony Orchestra and String Ensemble, under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music Brian St. John, will be holding open auditions Thursday, August 29, through Saturday, August 31. If you play an orchestral instrument (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion) and are interested in joining the UE orchestras, contact Dr. St. John at BS191@evansville.edu for further information.

 
* Fall Employee Wellness Screening - Sign Up On Line

The annual fall wellness screening is September 9 in Eykamp 253/254/255, Ridgwy University Center. Wellness credits for HRA insured will be awarded. If you attended during the summer, please do not schedule an appointment for this session.

Appointments are required. The scheduler is now open until September 6 at 10 p.m. Log in to AceLink to schedule an appointment for you and your insured spouse. You can also cancel and/or reschedule your appointment until close on Sept. 6.

HRA insured attend the health screening at no cost. Non-HRA employees/spouses may also schedule an appointment, but there is a $34 charge (payable by cash or check to the University) at the time of the screening.

* Coca-Cola Recycle Vehicle Coming to UE

The Coca-Cola Recycling Education Vehicle (REV) is coming to UE Wednesday, August 28 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on the Patio (South) side of Ridgway University Center. The REV is a self-contained vehicle, equipped with video screens, interactive displays, and games all designed to educate consumers about the benefits of recycling. Coca-Cola’s three REVs travel more than 120,000 miles a year, visiting more than 200 events and venues across North America. * Farewell Reception for Shannon Robertson

Please join the Office of Administrative Services for a farewell reception for Shannon Robertson on Friday, August 30 from 3-4 p.m. in the Office of Administrative Services on the second floor of the General Services building. Shannon has served the UE campus community as the UE Courier and Purchasing Specialist and will be missed.

UE Libraries offers tours for our new students as well as for returning students who may wish to join us. Each guided tour will take approximately thirty minutes. Schedule of tours follows. * Women's Equality Day Presentation

Dr. Julianne Malveaux will make a presentation at UE at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28 in Eykamp Hall 251 following her lunchtime keynote address as part of Evansville’s Women’s Equality Day Celebration.

Dr. Malveaux was the 15th President of Bennett College for Women. She is an economist, author, and commentator whose popular writings have appeared in USA Today, Black Issues in Higher Education, Ms. Magazine, Essence Magazine, the Progressive and many more.

She is well-known for appearances on national network programs including CNN, BET, PBS, NBC, ABC, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC, C-SPAN, and others.

A committed activist and civic leader, Dr. Malveaux has held positions in women’s, civil rights, and policy organizations.

The presentation is part of the Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series.

Women’s Equality Day commemorates the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Every year, events are held nationwide.
 

 
* UE Theatre Holding Fall Semester Auditions

UE Theatre will hold General Auditions, Wednesday, August 28, 6 pm in Shanklin Theatre. Callbacks will take place on Thursday, August 29, and Friday, August 30.

To be considered for a role, all non-majors should prepare to present one contemporary monologue (serious or comedic) AND a song from a Broadway musical, with a COMBINED time not exceeding two minutes. Time begins with the first word of your monologue or song. An accompanist will be provided and must be used.

All non-majors must pre-register by noon on Wednesday, August 28, by completing an audition request form in HH 106.

Productions slated for this semester include: CLYBOURNE PARK, by Bruce Norris; SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler; and ANATOMY OF GRAY, by Jim Leonard.

* Faculty Scholarship Display & Reception

The Libraries are hosting a FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP DISPLAY on October 14-28. Faculty are encouraged to contribute scholarship to the display, such as articles, books, book chapters, essays, creative works, etc. Works produced or published from August 2012 until July 2013 are eligible for inclusion in the display. Please send items to my attention by October 11.

The Libraries will host a reception honoring faculty on Thursday, October 17 at  2:30 p.m. in the J. Henry Schroeder Boardroom (Room 203) in the Library.

* Direct Loan Entrance Counseling Sessions

First-time borrowers of a Federal Direct Loan at the University of Evansville for the 2013-2014 academic year who have not already attended an Entrance Counseling Session are required to attend one of the following sessions:

August 26  (Monday)   Hyde Hall 126    4:30 pm 

August 28  (Wednesday)  Hyde Hall 126    4:00 pm

Entrance Counseling is a federal requirement which needs to be completed before your Federal Direct loan funds can be applied to your student account. Please arrive early; no one will be admitted after the session has started.

* Fitness Center Hours

The Fitness Center will resume regular hours on Wednesday August 28. Regular hours are:

Monday through Friday - 6:30 am -10:00 pm
Saturday - 11:30 am - 5:30 pm
Sunday - 11:30 am - 9:00 pm

 
* Intramural Soccer Referees Needed

The Intramural Program is in need of referees for Soccer. Please stop by the Fitness Center and see Jeff Chestnut or Angie Stauber for more information.

 
* Join the University Band!

The University Band welcomes all musicians to join for the Fall 2013 semester. We have exciting concert band music and a great set of tunes for our basketball pep band. No audition needed! Rehearsals are Mondays from 4:00-5:15 p.m., plus games and a final concert. We welcome all woodwinds, brass, and percussion for this group. We even have some instruments for use (you check them out like library books, no rent $ required).

Calling all drummers - We need some solid drummers to play with the pep band too!

Please email Dr. Groulx at tg90@evansville.edu for more information, or if you know you want to join you can fill out an add/drop slip for MUS 110-02, or just show up on Monday, September 2 for our 4:00 pm rehearsal.

 
* Jill Griffin Joins Institute for Global Enterprise

Dr. Jill Griffin has been hired as GAP director in the University's Institute for Global Enterprise. She previously taught marketing at the University of Konstanz in Germany, and she holds a PhD in marketing from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Griffin began her new role at UE on Monday, August 19.

* Join the Admission Student Calling Team

The Office of Admission is looking for enthusiastic students (sophomores-seniors) to help make phone calls to prospective students. You will be required to work 6-8 hours per week, with this being a paid position. If you would like to learn more about this opportunity, email Kenton Hargis at kh88@evansville.edu by this Friday, August 30.

 
* LaNeeca Williams Named Diversity and Equity Officer

LaNeeca Williams has been hired as diversity and equity officer at the University of Evansville. She comes to UE from Colorado State University-Pueblo, where she spent five-and-a-half years as director of affirmative action, equal employment opportunity, and campus diversity.

Williams, an Evansville native, began her new role Monday, August 26. A welcome reception, open to the entire campus community, will be held from 3-4 p.m. today on the second floor of Olmsted Hall.

As UE’s diversity and equity officer, Williams will serve as a member of the Office of the President, leading and coordinating efforts in all aspects of diversity, inclusion, educational and employment equity, affirmative action, cultural understanding and competency, and civil and human rights. She will work with internal and external constituents to advance diversity and equity as core values essential to the University's educational mission.

“I am excited about the opportunity to return to Evansville and work at such a wonderful university,” Williams said. “I loved the family-like atmosphere when I visited, and I look forward to working on important diversity initiatives at UE.”

Prior to her position at CSU-Pueblo, Williams served as director of diversity and affirmative action at Indiana State University from 2004-2008.

Williams holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Indiana State University in family and consumer science education.

* Office Depot Returns

The Office of Administrative Services handles all online Office Depot product returns.  Departments with product returns or issues need to contact Cathy Wellmeier for instructions at extension 2941 or email cw220 prior to sending any product to Mail Services.  Contacting Cathy first helps to expedite the return process and ensure department credit for returned product, as applicable.

Payal Patel-Dovlatabadi, assistant professor and director of public health, had an article titled "Factors Associated with Physicians' Prescribing Behavior for Treatment of Influenza in the U.S." accepted in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Marketing.
