* YOU Can Make an IMPACT! Here's How

It is an exciting time at the University of Evansville as we explore the many ways we IMPACT the lives of our students and the community – near and far. Each of us has the opportunity to shape how we demonstrate our UE mission to the world. Among other things, you can share ideas for new projects or new ways to do existing ones, offer constructive criticism, compliment the work of a co-worker, etc. A new process has been implemented to make it easy for you to do that. It’s called Meaningful Connections and we promise, this is not your grandma’s suggestion box! Just follow these easy steps: 1) Go to https://webadvisor.evansville.edu. 2) Select either Students or Employees menu option. 3) Under “Meaningful Connections”, select Make an IMPACT – Share Your Ideas 4) Select the category for your impact (they are self explanatory and if all else fails, choose “other”). 5) Give a description of your suggestion, compliment, or opportunity for improvement (you can even include electronic artwork, pictures, or documents). 6) You will receive a Thank You splash screen acknowledging your Meaningful Connection was successfully entered into the system and it will be forwarded to the appropriate Vice President for review and follow up.

* Sign up for United Way's Day of Caring

Each year UE supports United Way by allowing employees to volunteer during business hours on the United Way Day of Caring. This year it is Friday, September 6 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (lunch will be provided at our site). UE employees who are interested in participating are asked to complete the volunteer form. Employees DO need supervisor approval, but are not required to take leave time to participate. UE employees will volunteer again this year with Evansville ARC on several projects. The projects are listed on the volunteer form. Please indicate your preference of projects and we will try to accommodate your choice. UE has been a proud leader in Day of Caring participation in past years. This year President Kazee and Dr. Sharon Kazee will be joining our team and encourage your participation.

All Day of Caring workers are invited to an early morning breakfast and program at the Centre in downtown Evansville before you start work from 7 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. Evansville ARC and United Way greatly appreciate your time, hard work, and willingness to serve our community. Thank you!

* Last Chance: UE Night at the Otters

Join us for an evening of fun and fellowship at Bosse Field on Thursday, August 22. All University of Evansville alumni, friends, and families are invited. Price is $14 per person and includes game ticket and picnic dinner of fried chicken, BBQ pulled pork, cole slaw, potato chips, and soft drinks. UE student ticket is $5 per person. * Faculty Scholarship Display & Reception

The Libraries are hosting a FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP DISPLAY on October 14-28. Faculty are encouraged to contribute scholarship to the display, such as articles, books, book chapters, essays, creative works, etc. Works produced or published from August 2012 until July 2013 are eligible for inclusion in the display. Please send items to my attention by October 11.

The Libraries will host a reception honoring faculty on Thursday, October 17 at  2:30 p.m. in the J. Henry Schroeder Boardroom (Room 203) in the Library.

* Fall Employee Wellness Screening Scheduled

The annual fall wellness screening is September 9 in Eykamp 253/254/255, Ridgway University Center. Wellness credits for HRA insured will be awarded. If you attended during the summer, please do not schedule an appointment for this session.

There is a new procedure this year – appointments are required. Beginning August 21 until September 6 at 10 p.m., log in to AceLink to schedule an appointment. Schedule an appointment for your insured spouse, too. If necessary, you can cancel and/or reschedule your appointment until close on Sept. 6.

HRA insured attend the health screening at no cost. Non-HRA employees/spouses may also schedule an appointment, but there is a $34 charge (payable by cash or check to the University) at the time of the screening.

In addition, opportunities for faculty and others to connect to some existing social responsibility initiatives with their classes will be covered. Leap into Nearpod and Bring Your Classroom to Life! – Amy Hall
This interactive session will provide an overview of Nearpod, an innovative app that you can use in your classroom to engage your students in their learning. Nearpod allows you to take a boring PowerPoint presentation and turn it into interactive mobile presentations that allow you to assess your learner’s knowledge every step of the way. Bring your favorite mobile device (like an iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone) or your laptop computer and see firsthand how Nearpod works. If you bring a mobile device, download the Nearpod app at the App Store before you come. Tips on how to use Nearpod and how to implement it successfully in the classroom will be provided.

Update on the HLC Open Pathway:  2015 Comprehensive Evaluation and Quality Initiative – Brian Ernsting
This session will provide an update on activities related to our upcoming institutional accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission.  We will cover progress to date, with an update on the QIP and the work of the Assurance Committee.  A roadmap for future work will be presented, including a description of the kinds of data needed to populate the evidence file.

Academic Cost Analysis of Departments and Majors: Bring your Brown Bag Lunch - Drinks and Dessert Provided – John Mosbo
This session includes information presented to the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees at its May meeting. It considers the expense per student credit hour originating from various budget lines, such as salaries, operating lines and capital equipment holdings associated with the department, as well as overhead from the respective dean’s office and academic areas such as the library. Also considered are pedagogical approaches (e.g., writing intensive, labs, studios and clinicals), the interconnectedness of academic programs, and issues of capacity – potential consequences of increased enrollments.

NAC&U member universities are engaged in three goal areas:  to improve and individualize the evaluation of faculty work, to develop holistic department models, and to articulate and expand the NAC&U focus on integrating liberal arts and professional studies.  Campus team leaders will answer questions about the progress to date and lead discussion about how best to approach these goals on our campus.

A student veteran entering the first year of college is at a critical life marker and, much like any student, is dependent on a positive and successful experience to make graduation a likely outcome. It is especially important for colleges to recognize that student veterans bring their own set of characteristics that require special attention during the first year. This webinar will address ways to improve the graduation rate of your student veteran population with particular attention to their first year. 90 minutes.

* Dr. Mark Davis Named Faculty Athletics Representative

Dr. Mark Davis, associate professor of biology, has been appointed by President Kazee to succeed Professor Tamara Wandel as the University's Faculty Athletics Representative. Dr. Davis will serve in this capacity through July 2016, working closely with UE's offices of financial aid, admissions, and the registrar on behalf of UE student-athletes, and representing UE with the NCAA and Missouri Valley Conference.

* Used Books & Donation Boxes for Annual United Way Book Sale

The 4th Annual United Way Book Sale will be held on Wednesday, October 16 and Thursday, October 17. Donation boxes will soon appear around campus. Their locations will be published in a future Acenotes. If you have a large number of books to donate, please contact Meg Atwater-Singer at ma35 or x2487.

 

* New Hires

Ashley Barlow (right) has been hired as an assistant women's basketball coach. She comes to UE from IUPUI, where she was an assistant coach for two seasons. Prior to her role at IUPUI, Ashley played four seasons at the University of Notre Dame where she was an All-Big East performer. 

Gail Vignola (left) has been named academic director of UE's Writing Center, effective August 19. She will continue teaching as a faculty member in the Intensive English Center, a position she has held since 2012, and holds a master's degree from Barry University and the University of California, Berkeley.

Alicia Choi (right) has been named artist in residence with the Eykamp String Quartet.

She comes to UE from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she completed a year of the Artist Certificate in Chamber Music degree, and she holds a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School and a Bachelor of Arts from Williams College. Alicia, a violinist, began her position at UE August 14.

* Discounted Parking Permits for UE License Plate Holders

Students, faculty, administrators, and staff who sport the UE State of Indiana license plate in 2013 (new and renewal plates) will receive a $25 discount off the UE parking permit fee for 2013-14. The registration process for the plates is now handled through the state. If you want to purchase or renew a UE plate, visit www.in.gov/bmv/2744.htm. If you already have your 2013 UE plate, bring your State of Indiana vehicle registration to the Office of Safety and Security when you purchase your parking permit for the new academic year. If you have not registered your vehicle yet, you will need to pay the full parking permit fee and then bring your registration to the Office of Safety and Security to get a credit for $25. The Office of Administrative Services handles all online Office Depot product returns.  Departments with product returns or issues need to contact Cathy Wellmeier for instructions at extension 2941 or email cw220 prior to sending any product to Mail Services.  Contacting Cathy first helps to expedite the return process and ensure department credit for returned product, as applicable.

* Arthur Brown Has Article Published in Current Issue of Philosophy and Literature

Professor of English Arthur Brown’s article, “Gen-, Shakespeare, Heidegger, and the Nature of Mortal Being” has been published in the current issue of Philosophy and Literature (Johns Hopkins University Press).  An abstract and the entire article are available through the following links:

* R. Scott Lank Receives National Post

Professor R. Scott Lank, Department of Theatre, has been selected to serve as Co-Chair (along with Broadway/film/televison veteran actor Stephen Henderson) of the new National Congress of Actors and Acting Teachers. The National Congress, in association with The Actors Center in NYC, will serve as a vital national resource for establishing standards in actor education throughout the country.

* Timothy L. O'Brien Receives SAGE Teaching Innovations and Professional Development Award

Assistant Professor of Sociology Timothy L. O'Brien received a SAGE Teaching Innovations and Professional Development Award at the 106th Annual Meetings of the American Sociological Association. O'Brien also presented two papers at the conference titled "Graduate Training and the Reproduction of Gender Inequality in Scientific Careers" and "Science, Religion, and Public Opinion in the United States."

* Dale Edwards

UE biology professor Dale Edwards and his colleague Malcolm Vidrine (retired Professor of Biology, LSU Eunice) recently published a new book, Mites of Freshwater Mollusks. The book provides both a summary of worldwide research on mites parasitizing freshwater mollusks and integrates new data regarding the evolutionary relationships among these animals.

“These mites and their host mussels serve as an excellent example of the roles that a variety of remarkably unknown organisms play in the health and survival of natural areas,” remarked Edwards. “Moreover,” he added, “they serve as indicator organisms that can be used to analyze threats and the extent of decimation due to various kinds of environmental changes.”

The book provides a worldwide resource for the study of these mites and mussels, which are known from watersheds on every continent. Mites of Freshwater Mollusks is available at Amazon.com.

Jeff Wolf and family on the death of his stepmother, Shirley Ann Wolf, who passed away Friday, August 16. Visitation is this evening, August 20 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado, Illinois. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21.
