* Fitness Center Closed from July 29-Aug 2

The Fitness Center will be closed July 29 through August 2 for refinishing of the gym floors. It will reopen on August 5 at 8:00 am.

* Cara Fabrocini Elected Director of Supreme Council for Phi Sigma Sigma

Cara Fabrocini, assistant director of the Center for Student Engagement, was elected to be a director of the Supreme Council for her sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma. Cara was elected one of four directors to serve a two year term while at Phi Sigma Sigma's national convention celebrating 100 years in existence last week in New York.

 
* Students to Help Nonprofit Organization Launch Medical Clinic in Dominican Republic

As part of an intensive summer course in applied process development – and an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a developing country – 15 University of Evansville students will spend the next two weeks in the Dominican Republic.

From July 23-August 6, UE business, communication, engineering, and nursing students will work with the nonprofit organization G.O. Ministries to develop plans for the organization’s new medical facility, currently under construction in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

UE students traveling to the Dominican Republic are Vaughn Ahlf, Jacquelyn Ballard, Ryan Bassemier, Laura Best, Brandi Blosl, Abby Browder, Mathew Brown, Heather Browning, Renee Croce, Gaby Fifer, Rachel Mendoza-Santiago, Shannon Osiecki, Breianna Simpson, Brenna Siscoe, and Brynne Thompson.

UE faculty members accompanying the group are Amy Hall, White Family Endowed Professor and chair of the Dunigan Family Department of Nursing and Health Sciences; Richard Deer, director of UE’s Center for Intensive Experiential Education; and Jill Griffin, director of the Global Assistance Program in UE’s Institute for Global Enterprise. John Layer, associate professor of mechanical engineering, will deliver online course components.

Athletics

* Freeland Selected to Cape Cod League All-Star Game

University of Evansville junior pitcher Kyle Freeland has selected to represent the Hyannis Harbor Hawks and the West Division in this year’s Friendly’s Cape League All-Star Game, as announced by the league Saturday afternoon.

Freeland has appeared in six games for the Harbor Hawks, making five starts and sports a 2-1 record with a 2.01 ERA.  The southpaw has is currently tied for the league lead with 33 strikeouts over 31.1 innings and has issued just four walks.

Hyannis currently leads the West Division with a 19-11-1 record and had five players, including Freeland, selected to the Cape League’s midsummer classic.

The 2013 Friendly’s Cape League All-Star Game will be played Saturday, July 27 at 4:30 p.m. ET at Red Wilson Field, which serves as the home to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.  The game will be televised nationally on Fox College Sports (Comcast Channel 262 and DirecTV Channel 623).
