Members of Pi Gamma Mu, the International Honor Society in the Social Sciences, are sponsoring Operation Care Package to collect care packages for our troops stationed overseas this holiday season.  It is their goal to have 50 sponsored care packages for Veterans Day, to reach the troops by the holidays.

When you sign up to sponsor a care package, you can select the branch of the military you would like to receive your care package: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard.  In addition, you can choose to specify the care package to go to a female or male service member. 

Once you are signed up to sponsor a care package, your organization/group will bring the items that you have collected and $13.45 for shipping to Dr. Plikuhn's office in the Department of Law, Politics, and Society in Room 62 in Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Building.  Pi Gamma Mu will provide the shipping boxes, prepare them for shipping, and send out the care packages.

If you have a family member or friend who will be stationed overseas for the holidays, please contact Dr. Plikuhn.  We would love to send care packages to the friends and family of our UE community.

On Monday, Oct. 29, the Newman Club will be holding its annual Halloween party for the children at the Ozanam Family Homeless Shelter, and needs your help to make it a success! Needed donations include candy, costumes for children 10 and under (or items that could make up part of a costume like funny hats or old dance recital costumes), face paint, and items that could be used for Halloween treat bags for the children. We especially need more boys' costumes this year. You can bring items to the Newman Center, to Mass on campus, or to other Newman events. Volunteers are also needed! After playing to enthusiastic crowds at the 2012 Republican and Democratic National Conventions, the nonpartisan political documentary “Electoral Dysfunction” is coming to the University of Evansville — along with film producer/director/writer David Deschamps and one of the film’s principal subjects, Democrat Mike Marshall from North Vernon, Indiana.

The screening of “Electoral Dysfunction” will begin at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 28 in Eykamp Hall, Ridgway University Center. After the film, Deschamps and Marshall will hold a panel discussion moderated by Robert Dion, UE associate professor of political science. The event, presented by UE’s Department of Law, Politics, and Society and the Office of University Relations, is free and open to the public. 

“Electoral Dysfunction” follows political humorist Mo Rocca as he sets out on a road trip to see how voting works — and doesn’t work — in America. He heads to Indiana, home to some of the strictest election laws in the country, and meets Republican Dee Dee Benkie and Democrat Mike Marshall, who take him inside their efforts to get out every vote. As he progresses on his journey, Rocca searches for the Electoral College; investigates the debate over Voter ID and voter fraud; critiques ballot design with Todd Oldham; and explores the case of a former felon who was sentenced to 10 years in prison — for the crime of voting.

“Electoral Dysfunction” was written, produced, and directed by David Deschamps, Leslie D. Farrell, and Bennett Singer, whose collective credits include multiple Emmy, Peabody, and duPont-Columbia awards. The film’s host, Mo Rocca, is a correspondent for “CBS Sunday Morning,” a panelist on NPR’s “Wait, Wait ... Don’t Tell Me!,” and a former correspondent for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

Students who have received a Direct Loan while attending UE and plan to graduate, withdraw from school, or transfer to another school, are mandated by federal regulations to attend an Exit Counseling Session.  The Office of Financial Aid will hold sessions in Room 126 in Hyde Hall on October 25 at 12:30 p.m. and December 5 (Reading Student Day) at 1:30 p.m. 

You must arrive on time and bring the names, addresses and phone numbers of 2 people who you will remain in contact with after leaving UE, plus a next of kin at a different address than yours. Each session will last approximately 30 minutes.

Purple Aces Little Monster Mash Kids Night Out with UE Athletes is planned for Sunday, October 28 from 2-5 p.m. at Carson Center. This event is for children ages 3-12. Admission is $10 per child.

ALL December graduates should plan on attending Commencement Central anytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 25.  During this event you will finalize your graduation plans by meeting with the Registrar's Office, Alumni Office, and Career Planning Office.  You can also purchase your Cap and gown, and order graduation announcements if desired.  There will also be a giveaway drawing for all that attend.  The event will be set up outside the UE Bookstore in the Ridgway Center.  This is a must for any December graduate and can be done quickly and easily.  If you have any questions please contact the UE Bookstore.

This year’s Thomas C. Fiddick Memorial Lecture is set for October 26 at 7 p.m. in Eykamp 251 in Ridgway University Center. The speaker will be Craig L. Symonds, Professor of History Emeritus at the United States Naval Academy. His topic will be “Lincoln and the Navy in the Civil War.”

The first person to win both the Naval Academy’s “Excellence in Teaching” award (1988) and its “Excellence in Research” award (1998), Symonds also served as History Department chair from 1988 to 1992, and received the Department of the Navy’s Superior Civilian Service medal three times.  He was professor of strategy at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island (1971-74) and at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, England (1994-95).  After retirement in 2005, he returned to the Academy in 2011-12 to serve a year as” The Class of 1957 Distinguished Chair of American Naval History.” 

Symonds is the author or editor of 25 books, including prize-winning biographies of Joseph E. Johnston (1992), Patrick Cleburne (1997), and Franklin Buchanan (1999), as well as The American Heritage History of the Battle of Gettysburg (2001).  Decision at Sea: Five Naval Battles that Shaped American History, won the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Prize for Naval History in 2006.  His 2008 book, Lincoln and His Admirals: Abraham Lincoln, the U.S. Navy, and the Civil War, won the Barondess Prize, the Laney Prize, the Lyman Prize, the Lincoln Prize, and the Abraham Lincoln Institute Book Award.   He also won the Nevins-Freeman Prize in 2009.  His latest work is The Battle of Midway, published by Oxford University Press in October 2011.

Anthony Beavers, professor of philosophy and director of cognitive science, was presented with the 2012 World Technology Award in Ethics this past Tuesday night at a special ceremony held at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. He was recognized for his work in moral theory, which attempts to show how and why existing ethical frameworks are insufficiently suited to the information age and why ethicists need to develop other alternatives. The World Technology Awards are presented in association with TIME, Fortune, CNN, Technology Review, and Science and go to the "peer-nominated, peer-elected most innovative people in science and technology" defined as those doing "the innovative work of the likely longest significance."

Thirty awards are offered each year, twenty to individuals and ten to corporations. Winners this year included SpaceX, the first private company to get a rocket to the space station and back, Ekso Bionics for successfully developing technology to allow paraplegics to walk on their own through the use of a robotic exoskeleton, and NASA Engineer Adam Steltzner of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena for his role in successfully landing the rover Curiosity on Mars this past August. Among the more recognizable past recipients of World Technology Awards are Al Gore (for Policy), Linus Torvalds, developer of the Linux operating system (for Commerce / Communication Technology), Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World-Wide Web (for Communication Technology), Larry Page and Sergey Brin, founders of Google (for Marketing Communications), and Mark Zuckerberg, lead developer and co-founder of Facebook (also for Marketing Communications).

The 2012 Fall Phonathon Campaign is now underway and the University of Evansville Development Office of Annual Giving would like to congratulate the student callers on a fantastic first week.  The students have been hard at work calling alumni, parents and friends of UE talking about the Big Freeze, upcoming homecoming events and the new Fifth Third Bank Practice Facility.  In the first week they have raised over $52,000 to help fund student scholarships and departments on campus.  Great job and keep up the good work!

Five UE students (Lan Do-Accounting, Andrea Cadavid - global business, Brenna Siscoe - nursing, and Vaughn Ahlf - and Justin Jackman - both mechanical engineering) comprised the inter-disciplinary UE team that won first place in the Lawrence Technological University “Innovation Encounter” competition held on October 19-20, in Southfield, Michigan.   The UE team received a first place trophy, certificate, and a cash prize.  The competition included a total of seven universities: Gonzaga, Ohio Northern, Lawrence Tech, Villanova, Saint Louis University, Kettering, and UE. 

The UE team was coached by Assistant Professor of Nursing Jerrilee Lamar , and Rick Deer, director of the UE Center for Intensive Experiential Education.

The LTU “Innovation Encounter” competition was a team competition for inventive problem solving.  The teams were challenged with creating a business level solution for a real-world client (MASCO Bath) problem statement in a two day event.  The event engaged innovative students from the seven universities in both competition and the appreciation of the skills learned during their academic careers.  The competition was filled with educational components, networking opportunities, and valuable feedback on skills developed throughout the competition.  The LTU “Innovation Encounter” competition provided students the opportunity to work on a real-world problem that required teamwork, business planning, critical thinking, and innovation.

UE student participation was made possible through the support of the Kern Family Foundation and the UE Center for Intensive Experiential Education.

Freshman Alex Turner recorded a top ten finish as the Purple Aces men’s golf team came in 14th at the Dayton Fall Invitational.Turner followed up his opening-round total of 72 with a 74 on Tuesday to tie for 9th place with a 146.  Quinn Vilneff followed him with a 153.  That was good for a tie for 41st as his second-round score of 71 was the top round of the event for the Aces.

Rick Voyvodic tied for 65th with a 157 and was followed by Will Knights (159) and Parker Hensley (161).  Andrew Naas carded a 172 while playing as an individual. 

Evansville came in 14th place final score of 613.  They were just a stroke behind Bowling Green and three shots ahead of Owens CC, who placed 15th.  Oakland dominated the competition, finishing with a ten-shot lead to take the team championship.

Oakland also had the top individual as Nick Cunningham finished with a 140, just ahead of John Muir of Dayton, who tallied a 141.
 

Freshman Paige Crafton shot a 74 to lead the University of Evansville women’s golf team in the second round of the Dayton Fall Invitational.Crafton shot a 74 to mark the best round of the tournament for UE.  Her total of 156 tied her for 27th place.  Joining her in that slot was Sydney Skiles, who also shot a 156 on the strength a second-round 80.

Cathy Doyle finished third on the UE squad as her 159 was good for a tie for 39th place.  Dana Hayden finished with a 170 while Kelly Lamarche tallied a 179.  Rachel Marchi notched a 197 to round out the team.

As a team, the Aces took 11th overall with a two round total of 641.  Detroit Mercy remained atop the leaderboard, taking the win with a 588.  They finished four strokes ahead of Valparaiso.  Ohio U. took third with a 605.

Kelly Voigt of Valpo earned medalist honors with a 139.  She shot a tournament-low 68 to wrap up the event.  She finished two shots ahead of Angela Codian of Ohio U.

On Monday, UE will be in town to host the Charles Braun Jr. Intercollegiate.  Quail Crossing Golf Club will play host to the event.

 The University of Evansville men’s soccer team will conclude its 2012 non-conference slate Wednesday evening in Bloomington, Ind., when it faces No. 16 Indiana at 6 p.m. on Jerry Yeagley Field.

The Purple Aces (9-5-0) head to Bloomington having won five of their last seven games, with every victory being a shutout.  UE posted a pair of key Missouri Valley Conference wins last week at Arad McCutchan Stadium, topping SIU Edwardsville, 1-0, Wednesday night Stadium, before downing Central Arkansas by the same score Saturday evening.

Sophomore goalkeeper Eric Teppen earned MVC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performances against the Cougars and Bears, as he recorded a pair of clean sheets and made six saves.  Teppen made four saves against SIUE in a weather-shortened match and followed it up with a pair of stops against UCA in a match where the UE defense successfully defended eight second-half corner kicks, in large part to Teppen’s efforts between the posts.  Senior Jesse Sharp netted Evansville’s lone goal against the Cougars, finishing a cross from Mark Anthony Gonzalez, while freshman Nate Opperman tallied the game-winner against the Bears with help from Alex Kapsalis and Nick Schroeder.

Freshman Faik Hajderovic leads the Aces with 13 points on four goals and five assists this season and Sharp ranks second on the squad with eight points, scoring three goals and dishing out a pair of assists.  Gonzalez and Schroeder are tied for third on the team with seven points apiece.  Teppen leads UE’s defensive efforts and enters Wednesday’s match with a 1.23 goals against average, five shutouts and 53 saves in 1243 minutes in net.

Indiana (10-3-2) saw its five-match unbeaten streak come to an end Friday night against Big Ten Conference opponent Michigan, as the Hoosiers fell, 2-1.  IU’s only other losses have come to Akron and Notre Dame, as Indiana is outscoring its opponents, 27-10, including an 18-5 margin after the halftime whistle. 

Eriq Zavaleta leads the Hoosiers with 28 points on 13 goals and a pair of assists, ranking him fifth nationally in total goals and seventh in points.  A.J. Corrado is currently second on the team with a goal and a Big Ten-leading nine assists.  Seven other Indiana players have recorded multiple points this season.  Goalkeeper Luis Soffner has played every minute in net for IU and has allowed just 10 goals in 1405 minutes for a 0.64 goals against average, a mark that ranks 12th in the country.  In addition, Soffner has posted eight shutouts and owns a .844 save percentage.

Indiana has dominated the all-time series with Evansville, as the Hoosiers own a 24-4-3 record against the Aces and are 13-0-1 in the last 14 meetings.  Last season, then-No. 10 IU downed UE by a narrow 2-1 margin at McCutchan Stadium.  Evansville’s last win over the Hoosiers came in 1990, when UE defeated Indiana, 1-0, in the NCAA Tournament.

University of Evansville softball coach Mark Redburn has announced an Instructional Camp that will take place on Sunday, November 4.Highlighting the camp is the UE coaching staff along with Doug Gillis, who is the Director of Coaching/Pitching at the University of Missouri.

It begins with hitting from 10:30-12:30 p.m. before stressing defense between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.  The first two parts are for attendees in grades 9-12.  The final portion is devoted to pitching and will be from 4-7 p.m. and is for children ages 10-18.

The hitting section includes successful hitting philosophies and mental approaches, taking advantage of pitchers’ strengths and weaknesses and preparing for college level pitching.  On the defensive side, you will learn how to throw from different angles, proper mechanics, getting lead runners out and much more. 

Nationally renowned pitching instructor Doug Gillis will cover the pitching part which will include a live demo, video analysis, major fundamentals, common fallacies and what it takes to pitch at the college level.

The University of Evansville women’s soccer team earned two more Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week awards this week, as freshmen Simone Busby and Abby Springer became the sixth and seven Purple Aces to garner MVC Player of the Week honors this season in an announcement by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

Busby was named the MVC Goalkeeper of the Week, after leading the UE defense to a pair of shutouts and making 14 saves in two wins.  The freshman keeper made six saves in a 3-0 win against Indiana State Wednesday afternoon and posted an eight-save performance in a 1-0 win at Creighton Saturday evening.  Against the Bluejays, Busby turned away six Creighton shots in the second half to preserve the victory.  In Missouri Valley Conference play, Busby owns a 4-1-1 record with four shutouts and leads the conference with a 0.32 goals against average and .935 save percentage.

Springer earned MVC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season by leading the Aces offensive with three points on a goal and an assist.  The Indianapolis native netted the game-winner for UE in its win over the Sycamores on Wednesday and also tallied an assist on Kayla Smith’s goal later in the match.  In Saturday’s regular-season finale at Creighton, Springer fired a team-high three shots, putting two of them on goal.  Springer leads Evansville with five goals and 12 points this season, scoring four of her goals and posting nine of her points in MVC contests.

The Aces wrapped up their regular season Saturday against the Bluejays, finishing Valley play with a 4-1-1 record.  Evansville is looking to win its first MVC regular-season title since 2008 and will be keeping an eye on Thursday’s match between Drake and Illinois State, as the Bulldogs need a win to claim the regular-season championship and the top seed in the MVC Tournament.  However, if the Redbirds win or earn a tie with Drake, UE would be Valley’s regular-season champion and own the top see for the MVC Tournament.
