* Tobacco Policy Input Last Chance!

Students, faculty, administrators, and staff: Today is the last day to provide input on the future campus tobacco policy. Also, you can drop in the Tobacco Policy Forum today  10:45 – 11:45 a.m. in Hyde 126 to talk with Tobacco Task Force members.

 
* Holiday Schedule Announced

The University of Evansville will be closed during the holidays to allow our employees to enjoy this special time with their families. The following November-December-January holiday schedule will be observed:

Thanksgiving
Wednesday, November 21, 2012 – close at noon
Closed Thursday, November 22, through Friday, November 23, returning Monday, November 26

Christmas/New Year’s Day
Closed Monday, December 24 through Tuesday, January 1, returning Wednesday, January 2
 

 

What's Happening Today

* This Week in Music: Faculty Quintet Performs

The Harlaxton Woodwind Quintet will present this week’s Faculty Recital in Wheeler Concert Hall on Tuesday evening, October 16, at 7:30 p.m. This Department of Music faculty ensemble includes Consortium Instructor Shauna Thompson (flute), Consortium Instructor Elizabeth Robertson (oboe), Department of Music Chair and Associate Professor Thomas Josenhans (clarinet), Professor Emeritus Edwin Lacy (bassoon), and Consortium Instructor Marc Zyla (French horn).  The performance will feature music from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including works by Franz Danzi, Paul Hindemith, Noel Scott Stevens, and Arne Running. The concert is free and open to the public.

Over 60 employers are registered for Health Careers Fair 2012. Come to the Student Fitness Center next Tuesday, October 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to meet employers who are interested in you! All students, freshmen through senior, who are considering a health-related career should attend. See registered employers in JobLink

* Neu Chapel Organ @ Noon Featuring Douglas Reed on October 18

Douglas Reed, University Organist, will present "A Tribute to Louis Vierne," part of the Neu Chapel Organ @ Noon series on Thursday, October 18, at 12:10 p.m. in the Neu Chapel organ loft.  Dr. Reed will perform several compositions by Louis Vierne, who died 75 years ago while playing an organ concert at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.  To put Vierne’s music in perspective, Reed will also perform compositions by J.S. Bach and by Charles Ives and William Albright who share October 20 as their birthdays.

The informal presentation is free.  Bring your lunch!

 
* Bible Study on Thursday Night

Adventist Campus Ministries will be having Bible study on Thursday night from 7-8 p.m. in Room153 (Eades Music Room) in the McCurdy Wing of Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Building.

This week we will be exploring the nature of the "Pre-Flood" Earth in the Bible and the Garden of Eden. What was the Earth like before Noah's flood?

* Purple Aces Little Monster Mash Kids Night Out with UE Athletes!

Purple Aces Little Monster Mash Kids Night Out with UE Athletes is planned for Sunday, October 28 from 2-5 p.m. at Carson Center. This event is for children ages 3-12. Admission is $10 per child.

Looking for some Halloween fun? Kids, come spend an afternoon playing games, making crafts, and enjoying snacks with Aces athletes while your parents relax at home. Remember to wear your Halloween costume so you can enter the costume contest!

* Brent Sternberg to Speak on Campus on October 23

Brent Sternberg, senior vice president and director of equities of Old National Wealth Management, will be speaking to UE students on October 23. His lecture will be at 4.00 p.m. in Smythe Lecture Hall (Room 170) in Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Building.  Sternberg will be sharing his thoughts on the current state of financial markets and the outlook for 2013. He is a 1996 graduate of UE and currently serves on the Alumni Board. Old National Wealth Management has assets over $7 billion under supervision. Sternberg graciously accepted an invitation to speak to UE students from Walayet A. Khan, Professor of Finance. The event is open to public.

 
* Important Event for December Graduates

ALL December graduates should plan on attending Commencement Central anytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 25.  During this event you will finalize your graduation plans by meeting with the Registrar's Office, Alumni Office, and Career Planning Office.  You can also purchase your Cap and gown, and order graduation announcements if desired.  There will also be a giveaway drawing for all that attend.  The event will be set up outside the UE Bookstore in the Ridgway Center.  This is a must for any December graduate and can be done quickly and easily.  If you have any questions please contact the UE Bookstore.

 
* Master of Ceremonies Tryouts for International Bazaar Is Wednesday

* Phi Mu Alpha's UE Idol

On Friday, October 26, the  members of Phi Mu Alpha will be hosting their annual musical event, UE Idol.  This year's theme is "New Millennium."  Students wishing to participate in the American Idol-style philanthropy can do so by choosing a song written between 2000 and the present.  Email the sheet music and contact information to cr139@evansville.edu by Monday, October 22 to sign up. To be a contestant, the fee is $25. Tickets will be sold at the door starting at 5:30 p.m. outside Wheeler Concert Hall.  All proceeds benefit music programs in the Evansville area.

The University of Evansville Department Of Religious Life will again sponsor a series of interfaith activities for the UE campus community.

The “What is My Neighbor Doing” series will explore the rituals and practices of living world religions. Several members of the Islamic Society will share and demonstrate some of the most important practices in Islam. There will also be time for Q and A.

* Year of Service Forum Planned for Wednesday, October 17

he Year of Service Forum is tomorrow - Wednesday, October 17 - from 6:30-8 p.m., Smythe Lecture Hall (Room 170), Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Building. A panel of faculty, alumni, and guests who have participated in distinguished Year of Service programs – AmeriCorps, Teach for America, Young Adult Volunteers, Peace Corps - will discuss their experiences. The hour-long Q&A will be followed by an informal reception where students can continue discussions with panelists. All students welcome! This event is sponsored by the Center for Career Development.

 
* Is It Time for Your Annual Mammogram?

Is it time for your annual mammogram?

The St. Mary’s Mobile Mammography Unit will be at at the Crayton E. and Ellen Mann Heath Center (Sampson Hall) on Friday, November 16 from 8:00 a.m.–noon.

Mobile Digital Mammography is designed to provide a very convenient means for today’s busy woman to complete routine testing. The screening will utilize digital mammography technology, the most advanced mammography imaging available.

To qualify, it must be one year and one day since your last mammogram.

Please bring your insurance card for billing purposes.  Appointments can be made by calling St. Mary’s Breast Center at 812-485-4437.

* Students - Pick Up Tickets Now for UE vs. USI Game

Students can pick up tickets for the October 27, USI vs. UE men’s basketball game beginning Tuesday, October 16 at 11 a.m. in the Carson Center Ticket Office. Students must show a valid UE ID with current activity sticker in order to pick up tickets. Tickets will be given on a first come first serve basis through October 24.  One ticket per valid ID.

 
* Faculty, Staff and Emeriti - Buy Discounted Tickets to UE vs. USI Game

Faculty, staff and emeriti can purchase discounted tickets to the USI vs. UE Men’s Basketball game on October 27. Tickets will be $10 and can be picked up at the Carson Center Ticket Office starting on October 15 through October 19. There will be a limit of (2) tickets per faculty, staff, and emeriti at the discounted rate. Additional tickets may be purchased for $14 & $18 depending on location. The ticket office will be open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. –5 p.m. All faculty, staff, and emeriti must present UE IDs.

 
* Last Call for Spring 2013 at Harlaxton College

There is still time to apply for the Spring 2013 semester at Harlaxton College, the British Campus of the University of Evansville.  Applications and course information are available at the Study Abroad Office, Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Room 261.

2012-13 Total Compensation Statements are now available on WebAdvisor: https://webadvisor.evansville.edu/  Once you log in to WebAdvisor, click on the Employees menu.  On the Employees menu, click on the "Total Compensation Statement" link at the bottom of the "Employee Profile" section to view the statement.

As an employee of the University of Evansville, you receive regular pay for the services you provide. Pre-registration for spring classes is now available on WebAdvisor. You must have your advisor approve your class selections on WebAdvisor in order to register during the time period that was provided to you in the 10/11 e-mail. Registration begins Monday night, October 29

Winter Intersession class schedules are available for viewing on WebAdvisor. Registration for Winter Intersession begins on Monday, October 29 in the Registrar’s Office.
 

 
* Homecoming Registration Form Now Available

The 2012 Homecoming Registration form is now available. This year’s student Homecoming theme is UE Through the Decades. Please be sure that your group of friends or organization registers to be involved by Monday, October 22.

 
* Time to Nominate Individuals for Employee Excellence Awards

The University of Evansville, in pursuit of excellence in service, wishes to recognize a non-faculty employee displaying records of achievement as a leader.  Leadership may be demonstrated in any of the following categories:

• Service to the University community
• Service to students
• Job performance and attitude towards fellow employees

To be eligible, an employee must be a full-time member of administration or staff.

Nominations for the November 2012 Employee Excellence Award are due no later than Wednesday, October 17.

* Housing Cancellation Deadline for Spring 2013

The last day to Cancel Housing Contracts for Spring 2013 is November 1 at 5 p.m. This is only for students who will be:

•Attending Harlaxton or Study Abroad
•Living locally with parents, legal guardians, or immediate family
•Having an internship, co-op, or clinical outside of the Evansville area for the semester
•Transferring or withdrawing for Spring 2013
•Graduating in December and will not be returning for Spring 2013.

Requests that do NOT fall in these categories are typically NOT granted.

Requests to move off campus to live with friends or move into an apartment are not sufficient reasons to cancel a UE housing contract.

Cancellation forms are available in the Residence Life Office on the second floor of Ridgway University Center.
 

 
* Faculty - Do You Have Students Interested in Presenting at NCUR?

The 27th National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR 2013) will be held April 11-13, at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in La Crosse Wisconsin. Undergraduate students are invited to give formal presentations or displays of original research, scholarly activities, or creative endeavors in all academic areas. Each year the Undergraduate Research Committee provides travel expenses for a number of students attending the National Conference. Faculty - if you have a student interested in presenting at NCUR and would like funding from the Undergraduate Research Committee, please email one copy of an abstract to md7@evansville.edu by 5:00 p.m.  on October 26. The Undergraduate Research Committee will review abstracts and determine which submissions will receive funding. (The deadline for submission of abstracts to NCUR is December 4).

Presentations/Displays may take the following forms:
Oral presentations,
Poster presentations,
Performing/Visual arts (Music, Dance, Theater, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Sculpture, Ceramics, Other Applied Arts, Video and Film)

* Mari Plikuhn and Antoinette Fafara Present Paper

Assistant Professor of Sociology Mari Plikuhn and senior anthropology major Antoinette Fafara presented a paper titled: "What's in a Name: The Use of Given Names in Verbal Communication, Technology, and Social Cohesion" at the 83rd annual meetings of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences on October 12 at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Ind.

 

Athletics

* Aces Hoopfest Set For Thursday

The University of Evansville’s annual Hoopfest presented by Heritage Federal Credit Union is set to take place on Thursday evening at the Ford Center.Set to begin at 6 p.m., admission to Hoopfest is free of charge.  Fans can also purchase sodas, hot dogs and popcorn for just $1.

Several events will be going on for both the Purple Aces women’s and men’s basketball teams including player introductions, a 3-point challenge, intra-squad scrimmages and a slam dunk contest.

Following the event, fans will have the opportunity to meet and get autographs from players on both teams.

Fans interested in purchasing tickets for the upcoming season can do so by visiting the ticket office at the Carson Center on the UE campus or by calling 812-488-ACES.
