* UE to Recognize International Day of Peace Today at Noon

The University of Evansville will observe International Day of Peace by hosting a brief ritual today at noon. The observance will take place at the Clifford Circle located at the center of the Sesquicentennial Oval in front of Olmsted Administration Hall. The bells which normally ring out from the Olmsted tower will be silent throughout the day on Friday. A Peace Bell will sound during the noontime ritual simulating the bell ringing at the national level. The community is invited to attend.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared September 21st to be the International Day of Peace; it is to be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence. The United Nations has invited all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organizations and individuals to commemorate the Day in an appropriate manner, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in establishing a global ceasefire. To inaugurate the day, the "Peace Bell" is rung at UN Headquarters in New York City. The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents (except Africa), and was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, as "a reminder of the human cost of war"; the inscription on its side reads, "Long live absolute world peace."

Since 2000, Heaton has had a strong connection with the country of Guatemala and has worked to make a difference in the lives of the Guatemalan people. For several years, he helped the working poor of Guatemala through the sales of fair trade crafts through a nonprofit he formed called Mayan Traditions.  Profits from the sales of the crafts were returned to Guatemala to help orphanages and children’s related ministries.  In the fall of 2008, Bishop Michael Coyner appointed Tom to do work with the poor of Guatemala.

In the spring of 2009, Heaton formed Mission Guatemala, a United Methodist related ministry that operates a clinic and a preschool feeding program in San Andrés Semetabaj, Guatemala.  Mission Guatemala is currently trying to discern new projects it can start in the San Andrés area to help improve the quality of life for the indigenous people of Guatemala.  Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere ranking fourth in the world for child malnutrition.

Prior to being called into ordained ministry, Heaton served as an advertising officer for a local bank.  He received his Masters of Divinity degree from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis.

* MVC Road Trip on Tap for Volleyball

The University of Evansville volleyball team will put its two-match win streak on the line as they take to the road for the first time in Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend. The Aces open up at Wichita State on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing Missouri State at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Evansville is coming off of its top performance of the season on Tuesday at SIU Edwardsville.  The Aces earned a road sweep over the Cougars while improving to 5-9 on the season.

Freshman Stephanie Cerino led the way with a career-high 11 kills while hitting an efficient .429 on the night.  Ashley Ring and Lauren Seyller each tallied nine.  Ring is the MVC leader in kills, averaging 3.86 per match.  She tallied a career-high of 28 last week versus Belmont.

Wichita State is 7-4 overall and split its opening Valley matches last weekend.  After topping Drake on Friday, the Shockers fell by a 3-1 final to Creighton on Saturday.  They are led by Chelsey Feekin, who is second in the MVC in hitting.  Her .455 total for the season is just .06 behind leader Alysia Mayes of Southern Illinois

Missouri State enters play this weekend with a 6-7 mark and also went 1-1 to open league play.  The Bears sit at or near the top in several MVC categories, including an average of 17.48 digs per set, tops in the league.  They are also second in kills/set with 14.04 and second in assists with 13.21.  Southern Illinois leads in both categories.

The Aces have struggled against the opponents they face this weekend.  Evansville has defeated Wichita State just once since the 2002 campaign with the victory coming last season.  Missouri State has topped UE the last seven times they have squared off.  The last win for the Aces against the Bears came in the 2008 season.
