First Harlaxton Video Conference Class Begins

This morning, at 11 a.m. at Harlaxton College, and at 5 a.m. at UE, visiting nursing professor Cindy Schaefer conducted the first videoconference community health class from Evansville to Harlaxton. By teaching with the video conferencing technology in Wallace Graves Hall, both classes are taught by the same instructor, and at the same time. Although the class regularly meets later in the day, Schaefer taught an extra-early session today in order to catch the Harlaxton students up on all the things studied Wednesday-Friday last week, as classes did not begin at Harlaxton until today, said nursing chair Jane Allen.

Allen is also teaching a professional leadership course to nursing students in the same manner.

In the near future, this technology will be offered in a variety of ways on the UE campus and can be used for such things as participating in a seminar conducted in a different location, sharing experts from different colleges or from our own, video conferencing meetings and for local business and industry’s use.

Funding for the video conferencing, among other projects, was made available through the $15 million grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc., in December 2003.
