University of Evansville baseball players Trentt Copeland, Jason Hockemeyer, and James Kohler have been selected to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team as voted on by the league's baseball sports information directors and announced by the Missouri Valley Conference office Thursday. The Aces co-led the MVC along with Indiana State with three representatives on the first team.
Senior Trentt Copeland, a native of Guelph, Ontario, hit .190 this spring with 10 doubles, three home runs, and 23 runs batted in. Starting 53 games at second base, Copeland led the team with 38 double plays turned and ranked second on the squad with 138 assists, helping UE to a program record and nation’s best .981 team fielding percentage. Copeland had a number of clutch hits this spring, including a walk-off winning gapper against UT Martin (3/13) and a series winning home run versus Creighton (4/1). A .276 career hitter, he finished his tenure tied for 5th all-time at UE with 57 career doubles and 17th all-time with 217 career hits. Copeland graduated in May with a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average in marketing. This marks his third first team MVC Scholar-Athlete honor.
Junior Jason Hockemeyer, a native of Sanford Michigan, ranked second on the squad with a .306 batting average and third on the team with 29 RBI, a .411 slugging percentage, and .401 on-base percentage. Hockemeyer co-ranked third in the MVC and co-led the Aces with five triples, while also leading the team with 21 multi-hit games. Spending time at both first base and left field in 57 starts, Hockemeyer had a team-high 396 putouts and ranked third with 34 fielding double plays. In the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, he piloted the team with a .455 batting average, .636 slugging percentage, and .538 on-base percentage. Hockemeyer owns a 3.54 cumulative GPA in biology.
Sophomore James Kohler, a native of Ames, Iowa, made 11 relief appearances this spring, including four against Valley teams. With a 0-2 record, he led all UE relievers with a 3.45 earned run average. Kohler had a stellar start to the season, not allowing a hit until his third outing or a run until his fourth appearance. The 6’8 right-hander tossed one inning against Illinois State in the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament (5/22). Kohler owns the team’s highest cumulative GPA, boasting a 3.91 in biology.
The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
