* Evansville Grabs 77-75 Road Win At Miami

Senior Denver Holmes scored a team-high 15 points as the University of Evansville men’s basketball team overcame a double-digit second-half deficit to take a 77-75 victory on Tuesday night at Millett Hall.

The Aces (5-5) used an 18-5 run in the second half to overcome a deficit of 11 points to grab their first road win of the season.  Julian Mavunga and Brian Sullivan led Miami (3-6) with 18 points apiece.

After getting off to a pair of slow starts in the last two contests, going down 7-0 to North Carolina A&T and 10-0 to Tennessee Tech, the Aces notched the first four points of the game as Ryan Sawvell opened up the scoring.  Miami took its first lead less than four minutes as Brian Sullivan knocked down a three to give the RedHawks a 7-6 advantage.  After missing its first two shots of the game, MU made six-consecutive buckets en route to a 14-8 advantage.

Miami continued to lead throughout the remainder of the half, taking its largest lead of nine points into halftime (35-26).  Miami shot 59.1% for the half, including an 8-11 performance on two-point buckets.  For UE, Sawvell made four of his five shots attempts in the period, eclipsing his career high in only ten minutes.

Drew McGehee hit a runner in the opening minutes of the second half to give the RedHawks their first double-digit lead of the contest at 37-26.  Evansville clawed its way back into the game.  Colt Ryan hit his first bucket of the game and Denver Holmes hit an and-one on the next trip down the floor to bring UE within five, 39-34, with 18 minutes remaining.

Two minutes later, Ned Cox brought the Aces within a possession after hitting a trey and on the next possession, Holmes connected on a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 44.  Later, Jordan Nelson made it 2-2 from three-point range to give UE a 47-46 lead, its first edge since early in the game.

Cox kept what would turn into an 18-5 run going with his second three before Rokas Cesnulevicius capped it off with a layup to make it a 52-46 advantage in favor of the Aces with 12 minutes left in the contest.  Julian Mavunga ended the run with a pair of free throws.

Mavunga and the RedHawks turned those free throws into an 8-0 stretch that saw them go back on top, 54-52.  Mavunga was responsible for five of those points.  Evansville utilized an 8-2 run of its own to retake a four-point edge as Kenneth Harris tallied a pair of field goals.  Miami quickly responded as Jon Harris knocked down MU’s eighth three-pointer of the contest to get back within one.

Evansville would reestablish its six-point edge with under four minutes remaining as Cox’s 12th point gave UE a 69-63 lead, but a relentless MU squad fired right back as Josh Sewell hit his third trey to make it a one-possession game.  After a pair of missed shots by UE, Mavunga struck again, hitting a game-tying three with 2:04 remaining.

The back-and-forth action continued as Colt Ryan put the team on his back, recording the next four points to put UE back up by four in the final minute.  Miami would get within two on three occasions, but the Aces hit all four free throws in the final minute to escape with the win.

Cox finished the game with 14 points while Harris had 12.  Ryan and Sawvell notched ten points apiece.  It marked the first double-digit outing of his freshman career.  The Aces shot 76.2% (16-of-21) in the second half, which helped greatly in the comeback effort.  For the game, Evansville shot 59.1%, its best outing since shooting 66.7% last season against Oakland City.

The Aces will have a nine-day layoff before returning to action at the Ford Center on December 29.  Southern Illinois comes to town to commence Missouri Valley Conference play.
