Tonight at 6 p.m. in Eykamp Hall 251, Ridgway University Center, the National Society of Leadership and Success will hold a live webcast featuring Alton Brown, titled, "A Few of the Secrets of My Semi-Moderate Success." Comedian Paul Varghese will be performing Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. in Eykamp 251, Ridgway University Center.  Paul Varghese's act includes a number of observations about being Indian, providing outsider-looking-in and insider-looking-out commentary, while also exploring an array of topics and issues outside that realm.  Don't miss it!

The Department of Music continues its First Tuesday Concert Series in Wheeler Concert Hall Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. with a “Classical Jazz” concert.  Since its inception and rise to popularity in turn-of-the-century New Orleans, jazz has inspired composers of the Classical tradition, leading them to create works that bridge the gap between the two styles by creatively blending characteristics of each.  Several great jazz musicians have crossed the bar as well, composing jazz-flavored works for the traditional concert orchestra or a collection of instruments from it.  The performance Tuesday night will feature fifteen Department of Music faculty members performing various jazz-inspired works by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington, among others.  The concert is free and open to the public.

Dr. Sharon Kazee will be the speaker at the Andiron Lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in Eykamp 252, Ridgway University Center. The lecture is at 4 p.m., with a social gathering with beverages at 3:45 p.m. Her topic will be “Arts for Our Sake: The Arts Imperative in Today’s Educational Climate.”

Sharon Kazee earned her PhD in educational administration at the University of South Carolina. Before coming to Evansville, she served as the dean and vice president for arts and academics at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, as fine arts coordinator with Greenville County Schools in South Carolina, and curriculum specialist for performing arts with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina. She recently received the Individual Research Initiative Award presented by the Arts Schools Network. Through her active community involvement, she is an advocate for arts and education initiatives.

In today’s educational environment, where uniform curriculum standards and high-stakes accountability are center stage, much of the recent research supporting arts education focuses on the extrinsic benefits of studying the arts. These studies indicate the arts are a vehicle for improvement in areas beyond themselves, such as academic performance, attendance, and behavior.  In contrast, this presentation will focus on the intrinsic value of the arts and why they are essential components of our students’ educational experience. Kazee will discuss her research related to musical expression and the current challenges encountered by arts advocates and educators.

UE's Think Outside the Lunch Box Faculty Speaker Series is back for the 2011-12 academic year! The series kicks off Thursday, Oct. 6 at noon. Dan Miller, director of UE's Institute for Global Enterprise in Indiana, will discuss the terms "BRIC" and "CIVETS" (acronyms for countries with fast-growing economies), then explore the opportunities these markets present for business and personal investing. Author Michael Martone will speak at the Creative Writing Coffee Hour on Thursday, Oct.  6,  at 4 p.m. in the Melvin Peterson Gallery. Martone, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind., is the author of five books of fiction, most recently, Double-wide: Collected Fiction of Michael Martone (Quarry Books, 2007). His collection of essays, The Flatness and Other Landscapes, won the AWP Award for Nonfiction, and he edited, with Lex Williford, The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Short Fiction. A graduate of The Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins, Martone has received two fellowships from the NEA and a grant from the Ingram Merrill Foundation. He is currently a professor at the University of Alabama.

The Department of Foreign Languages will be having its seventh Annual “Linguapalooza” event on Thursday, Oct. 6. Area high school students have been invited to campus to sharpen their foreign language skills by participating in culture, conversation and interactive sessions throughout the day. The last session will be an initiation to an additional foreign language (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian and Wolof).  Students will also take a tour of campus in their studied language.  Eleven area high schools as well as students from the homeschool community are participating this year with a total of 153 students.  The schools are:  Evansville Day, Jasper, Mater Dei, Southridge, Bosse, Owensboro Catholic, Mt. Vernon, Castle, Reitz, Apollo and Harrison.

The Graduate and Professional School Forum is scheduled for next Wednesday, Oct. 5, 6:30-8 p.m., in Room 170, Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Building. Faculty members, admission counselors, and alumni pursuing graduate degrees will answer questions on topics such as the decision to go to graduate school; making selections and applying; interviewing; admission processes; and program variants.

The Honors Program Student Advisory Committee (HPSAC) is currently looking for another organization to partner with to organize an educational or cultural trip this semester for an organization’s members and students in UE’s Honors Program. HPSAC is open to suggestions from all organizations. In past years, HPSAC partnered with the Psychology Club on a trip to the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University and collaborated with the Archaeology and History Clubs on a trip to the Indiana State Museum to see the Titanic Exhibit.

Congratulations to UE students Amanda Green and Jennifer Mason on their new jobs at Keep Evansville Beautiful. Green, who is working toward a Bachelor of Science in global leadership through UE's Center for Adult Education, will represent KEB as the civic education coordinator. She will work with schools and community groups to arrange opportunities for education about civil responsibility and recycling. Mason, who is enrolled in UE's Bachelor of Science in organizational leadership program (also offered through the Center for Adult Education), will serve as public affairs coordinator. She will collaborate with community and governmental leaders for public initiatives and lead KEB projects such as the Great American Clean-up.

Michael Sainz shot a 4-under 140 in Monday’s opening two round of the Butler Invitational as the Purple Aces enter Tuesday’s final round in second place.

Sainz shot identical scores of 70 to enter the final round just two shots out of first place.  Quinn Vilneff continued his stellar start to the season.  The freshman shot a 143 on Monday, which included a 3-under 69 in the second round.  He is tied for seventh place along with fellow Aces Neal Millay.

Millay opened up with a 70 in the first round before recording a 73 in Monday’s second round of 18.  Andrew Luo was the fourth Evansville player on the leaderboard, carding a 145 as he enters Tuesday in a tie for 17th.  Griffin Wood was the fifth Ace to wrap up day one in the top 21 as he notched a 146 and is tied for 21st.

As a team, Evansville shot a 568 on Monday and is just three shots off of Butler’s top pace of a 565.  The Bulldogs saw all five of their golfers finish up Monday in the top 17, led by Andrew Wegeng.  Wegeng was the top individual, tallying a 138, including a 7-under 65 in the second round.

The Aces will play the final 18 holes on Tuesday to wrap up the tournament. 

Senior Lauren Ellerman shot a 2-over 74 to lead the Purple Aces women’s golf team into a tie for sixth place following the opening 18 holes of the Butler Invitational at Highland Country Club.

Ellerman stands in a tie for sixth place after shooting a 74 on Monday.  She stands just two strokes off the lead entering Tuesday’s single round of 18 holes.

Cathy Doyle recorded a 75 on Monday, the top effort of her freshman career.  Her top previous round came when she shot an 84 in the second round of the season-opening Redbird Invitational.  Doyle is tied for tenth place.

Sydney Skiles carded a 79 and is tied for 28th while Alyssa Key came in with an 81.  Dana Hayden was the fifth Ace to play, finishing with a 92.

Three players are tied atop the individual leaderboard, tallying an even 72 on the day.  Michele Nash of Butler, Meghan Perry from Ball State along with Jordan Essman of IUPUI each finished on par to open the tournament.

Nash’s performance helped Butler take a five-stroke lead on day one.  The Bulldogs shot a 295 while Indiana State and Ball State came in with a 300.  Butler had three of the top six players in the opening round.  Evansville notched a 309 and stands just one shot behind Western Illinois and IUPUI, who are tied for fourth place.

The Aces will play the final 18 holes on Tuesday to wrap up the tournament.
