The University will begin a modified summer schedule on May 9 through August 8. Business hours for the campus will be adjusted during this period to 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. As always, the area supervisor is responsible for the scheduling decisions that will best meet the University’s and their respective department’s service requirements. We will return to regular hours on Monday, August 8.

The modified summer work schedule is incumbent on ensuring coverage to service our many constituencies. It is important to maintain our commitment and communication with students and their parents during the summer months. Your assistance in this regard is greatly appreciated. 

The free off-site paper shredding event by Piranha Mobile Shredding date has been rescheduled to Monday, May 9, from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. All UE students, faculty, staff, and alumni can take advantage of this free service by bringing paper to the Piranha truck in Koch Center for Engineering and Science parking lot. Paper will be shredded off-site.

So, if mounds of paper are taking over your office, home, or room, this is the time to gather those old files, receipts, cancelled checks, tax forms, etc. No need to take out the staples or paper clips. Avoid identity theft by having confidential information permanently destroyed.

Please - no telephone books, magazines, or newspapers. Also, please note that there is a 100 pound paper limit per visit (number of visits is not limited).

There will be an obsolete electronics recycling event today from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on the drive that loops around Hale Hall.

UE students and employees (faculty, administrators, and staff) can bring the following personal, obsolete electronic equipment to be recycled at no cost:

• LCD displays, LCD TVs and LCD monitors, computers, printers, fax machines, laptops, cell phones, PDAs, cables, circuit boards, connectors, electrical equipment, audio video equipment, DVD players, stereos, radios, calculators, speakers, and VCRs. Small quantities of batteries will be accepted.

The following items will not be accepted:

• CRT TVs and CRT computer monitors
• Fluorescent light bulbs (including compact bulbs), refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, stoves, vacuum cleaners, dehumidifiers, leaking batteries and any other items.

• Electronics owned by the University.

Note – the cost of processing CRT TVs and CRT computer monitors has increased significantly, and the University is no longer able to cover these items. However, these items may be brought to C&I Electronics, located at 1700 North Lafayette Avenue in Evansville, Monday–Friday, from 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. The cost will be 35 cents per pound.

Following the awards, UE Theatre Artistic Director R. Scott Lank announced the 2016–17 Shanklin Theatre season.  FAILURE:  A LOVE STORY, by Philip Dawkins, will open the season and be directed by Lank.  The musical OKLAHOMA!, with music by Richard Rodgers and book & lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, will be directed by guest artist Ruben Van Kempen with music direction by Gregory B. Rike.  The second semester will open with Diane Brewer directing SILENT SKY, by Lauren Gunderson.  John David Lutz will direct William Shakespeare’s HAMLET in April of 2017 to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of Shanklin Theatre.

Family, friends and loved ones of Marvin E. Hartig are pleased to announce the application process for the Dr. Marvin E. Hartig Memorial Scholarship.  This scholarship is dedicated to the loving memory of Hartig, dean of Evansville College’s Evening College in 1967, and administrator for the Center for Advanced Study, director of the Evansville chapter of the American Institute of Banking (AIB), and the international student advisor.  In 1974, Hartig was appointed dean of academic services.  He retired in 1984 after serving his alma mater for 35 years and passed away in 2007.

Applicants must be sophomores in 2016-17 and must show demonstrated financial need on the 2016-17 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Preference will be given to a student working while being enrolled as a full-time student.  

International students are also encouraged to apply and should include in their essay any particular factors impacting their financial need and how the scholarship money will benefit them since international students do not file the FAFSA.

Applicants must submit the completed application and a typed statement (not to exceed one page), describing themselves, their scholastic and career goals, why they need this scholarship, and how the scholarship proceeds might be used.   

Completed applications are to be sent to the Office of Financial Aid by June 1, 2016.  Decisions will be announced by August 1, 2016.  Applications may be e-mailed to financialaid@evansville.edu.

• 2016-17 financial aid award information will be available in mid-June once satisfactory academic progress (SAP) is reviewed at the conclusion of the spring semester.

• Monitor your financial aid information including checklist items and missing information through the Financial Aid Self-Service link in WebAdvisor. Please review these items for further details.

• Throughout the summer, continue to check your UE e-mail and Financial Aid Self-Service for notifications or requirements regarding your 2016-17 financial aid.

• If you’re planning to file the 2016-17 Free Application for federal student aid (FAFSA) (fafsa.ed.gov), please do so by June 1 in order to receive a comprehensive financial aid award.

• Description and purpose of purchase
• Account number charged for purchase

These expenses will be charged to your 2016-17 budget funds.

The last day for mail delivery and pick-up by UE mail services for all students living in UE housing will be Wednesday, May 4. Students are asked to review the Office of Residence Life website’s On-Campus Services - Mail Services link prior to departure from UE campus. Also, students are strongly encouraged to contact financial institutions directly regarding mailing address changes. Please note that UE is not responsible for fines or penalties due to delayed mail delivery.

Those anticipating packages shipped via couriers (FedEx, UPS, DHL, USPS, etc.) that may arrive after their departure, should contact UE mail services to make arrangements to pick-up these items prior to leaving UE. Please note UE mail services will not be able to forward items.

Senior sociology and psychology major Mackenzie Gammans was awarded the 2015-16 Hanns G. Pieper Senior Research Award in Sociology and Criminal Justice for her senior research project entitled, "Media and Stigma of Mental Illness." The honor is awarded annually to the outstanding independent research project conducted, written, and presented by a student majoring in sociology, anthropology, gerontology, and criminal justice. The award is named for emeritus professor of sociology Hanns Pieper, for his dedication to promoting independent student research in sociology and criminal justice at UE for over two decades. The Department of Law, Politics, and Society congratulates Mackenzie on this accomplishment.

The Department of Foreign Languages held its annual Outstanding Student Awards on Wednesday, April 27. The winners for this year were: Kathryn Wolfinger, German; Hannah Mitchell, Russian; Jennifer Riedford, Spanish; Hannah Richardson, French; Max Engleman, Chinese. The Biology Awards Reception was held on April 27 to honor the outstanding achievements of UE biology students during the 2015-16 academic year.

The James A. Brenneman Student Service Award in Biology was given to Andrew Nunn, and the Patricia L. Akrabawi Teaching Assistant Award in Biology was presented to Taylor Davidson. These awards are named in honor of  Jim Brenneman and Pat Akrabawi, respectively for their long and generous commitment to UE biology students.

The Jerry T. Seng Freshman Biology Award recognizes retired faculty member Jerry Seng for his years of tireless devotion to the success of students, especially the freshmen. The recipient of the most outstanding freshman award was Kelly Nixon.

Elizabeth Daugherty received the David and Jennifer Pollock Sophomore Biology Award, named in honor of David and Jennifer Pollock (’78) for their generous support and contributions to the biology department.

Kate Slater received the P. “Louie” Winternheimer Junior Biology Award, named in memory of Louie Winternheimer for his 39 years of distinguished teaching and service at UE.

The outstanding senior award is named in honor of UE benefactors Dr. and Mrs. Robertson. The Charles and Patricia Robertson Senior Biology Award was presented to Alexandra Arguello.

Emily Denne has won the 2016 Psychology/Neuroscience Best Senior Thesis Award!  Her thesis was titled, "The Influence of Decision-Maker Gender on Child Custody Decisions." Emily's thesis was supervised by Professor Margaret Stevenson.  The thesis included original research findings that have been published as part of a chapter in the NOVA book titled Child Maltreatment: Public Attitudes, Psychological Effects and Prevention Programs. It was voted the best of this year’s 33 senior theses.

 Emily is from Indianapolis and next fall will be at Trinity College, Dublin, in the graduate psychology and social policy program. 

The Center for Career Development would like to thank the career advocates for their outstanding work during the 2015-16 academic year. The advocates were recommended by their academic dean and provided fundamental career development services for students. In this first year of the program, over 200 students were assisted by this outstanding cadre of young professionals.

In the end, a fourth comeback was not in the cards for the University of Evansville Baseball team as the Purple Aces fell 8-6 in 10 innings to visiting Illinois State on Sunday at Charles H. Braun Stadium.

The loss, which was the first in a rubber game this season for UE, handed the Aces (24-17, 7-5 Missouri Valley Conference) their first conference series loss of the season, and the team will now enter next weekend’s conference clash with league-leading Dallas Baptist looking to make up a 1.5-game deficit.

ISU, on the other hand, picked up their first series win of the year to improve to 14-28 with a 4-7 league mark.

For the fourth straight week, the Aces turned to Alex Weigand on the mound to win the series, and for the most part, the freshman southpaw excelled. He bounced back from allowing a run in the first to hold the Redbird bats silent for much of the game before surrendering a score in both the fourth and the seventh innings. It marked the first time the Bourbonnais, Illinois, native had allowed multiple runs in a start since April 2.

After playing a role in driving home the early equalizer in the second inning, Jonathan Ramon loudly announced his presence in the fourth inning with a game-tying solo blast to make it 2-2. It marked the tenth homer of the season for the senior, and the Jackson Heights, New York, native is now the first Aces hitter to record double-digit homers since the NCAA adjusted its bat standards prior to the 2011 season.

Ramon was one of six different Aces hitters to record multiple hits on the day. He finished 2-for-4 at the plate, and Josh Jyawook led the team with a 4-for-5 outing.

UE would take the lead with a Trey Hair single an inning later, but it was short-lived as the Redbirds touched home four times over the course of the seventh and eighth innings to grab the 6-3 edge.

A lead-off triple from Ramon got things going for UE in the bottom of the eighth, and an Eric McKibban single as well as Stewart Nelson flyout brought the Aces within one. Ramon followed up an inning later with a ninth-inning sac fly to make it even at 6-6.

However, ISU would surge ahead once again in the tenth as Brian Jestice surrendered a hit and a pair of walks to load the bases with one out. A sliding defensive play from McKibban at first base nearly helped the Aces get out of the jam, but ISU’s Owen Miller delivered a two-out bases-loaded single to left to plate the game-winning scores.

Miller finished with a 4-for-6 showing at the plate with five runs batted in, handing Jestice (2-1) his first loss of the season.

UE will be back in action later this week as the Aces are slated to close out the homestand with games against Murray State and Belmont before next weekend’s conference showdown in Dallas.
