What's Happening Today

* Meet the Campus Ministers Today in Ridgway University Center

Campus ministers will be available in Ridgway University Center today from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Stop by and meet them and chat for a bit before or after dinner.

* Catholic Campus Ministry's First Wednesday Night Mass

The Newman Club will have its first Wednesday night Mass of the school year tonight at 9:30 p.m. in Neu Chapel. Weekday Masses are a shorter version of Sunday Mass (usually about a half hour), and a great way to end the first day of classes with prayer. Confession will be available beforehand in the chapel at 9 p.m., and students will lead the praying of the Rosary beginning at 9:10 p.m. The celebrant this week is Father Chris Forler, associate pastor of Christ the King Catholic Church and a 2002 UE alumnus.

* Intramural Soccer Registration Now Open

Intramural soccer registration is now open.  Registration will be open until Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 11:55 pm.  To sign up a team, please visit www.IMLeagues.com.  Registration instructions can be found on our facebook group, University of Evansville Intramurals.  Registration instructions can also be found on the IM board in the Fitness Center, any of the on campus residence halls, and the activities board in Ridgway University Center.  If you have any questions, please email or call Rob Latva at rl78@evansville.edu or 488-2794.

* UE Opera Auditions

Auditions for the Schimdt Opera Series’ production of “Die Fledermaus” will be held Wednesday, Aug. 24 and Thursday,  Aug. 25. Come to the UE Opera Call Board across the hall from Fine Arts 106 to sign up for a time.  The audition takes about ten minutes and students will perform provided cuts from the opera as part of the audition. Those interested in participating in chorus do not need to audition and prior operatic experience is not required. Composed of the finest vocal talent on campus, the Schmidt Opera Series has built a reputation as one of the region’s best undergraduate opera programs. The Series has presented fully staged productions every semester for the last several years, including sold-out performances of la Boheme last fall. Contact Director of Opera Jon Truitt for more information jt82@evansville.edu

* WUEV/AcesTV Informational Meeting Scheduled For Wednesday

91.5 F.M-WUEV (UE’s campus radio station) and AcesTV will have a combined “call-out/informational meeting” for interested new members on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. in Eykamp 253 in Ridgway University Center.  WUEV offers a wide variety of music, with both on- and off-air positions available in such genres as top 40, alternative rock, rap & hip-hop, jazz, blues, world music, Christian, and children’s music, while also offering positions in both sports and news.  AcesTV, meanwhile, is a video service in which students get hands-on experience shooting video, editing, and working live events –both athletic and campus oriented.

No experience is necessary. For more information, please contact WUEV general manager Tom Benson via email at tb39@evansville.edu

* United Way Day of Caring Sign Up Is Underway

Each year UE supports United Way by allowing employees to volunteer during business hours on the United Way Day of Caring. This year it is Friday, Sept. 9. UE employees who are interested in participating are asked to complete the volunteer form at this link. Employees DO need supervisor approval, but are not required to take leave time to participate. UE will volunteer again this year with Evansville ARC and ARC Industries on several projects. The projects are listed on the volunteer form. Please indicate your preference of projects and we will try to accommodate your choice. UE has been a proud leader in Day of Caring participation in past years. This year President Tom and Dr. Sharon Kazee will be joining our team and they encourage your participation. We would like to have many more volunteers to join us this year!

All Day of Caring workers are invited to an early morning breakfast at the Centre before starting work. Evansville ARC and United Way greatly appreciate your time, hard work, and willingness to serve our community.  Thank you!
Please fill out the volunteer form and return it to Brian Conner in Ridgway University Center, room 229, by Aug. 10 (if you want to be able to choose your T-shirt size) and no later than Aug. 29 (your choice of T-shirt size can not be guaranteed).

* PAADS Renewal

If you have not done so, it is time to renew PAADS (Pre-Approval Authorization for Distribution Services) forms for Fiscal Year 2011-12.

Are you constantly seeking the appropriate signatures for Copy Service Requests and/or In-House Office Supply forms before submitting your request? Avoid the routing hassles by completing and submitting a PAADS form with signature authorizations (per the UE Approval Policy.) This will pre-authorize a requestor of Distribution Services for the fiscal year based on the dollar amount designated, account numbers provided and services requested.

Note: If employee status change (requestors and approvers) during the fiscal year does void a PAADS and a new approved PAADS is required.

The PAADS form and instructions are located on the Copy Services or Central Receiving websites on AceLink Areas. Print and complete a PAADS form, obtain the required authorized signature and submit the form via campus mail to Doris Cook/Distribution Services/GS.

For questions, contact Doris Cook at extension 1067 or email dc47@evansville.edu

Congratulations

* Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Congratulations to UE's Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon for winning the fraternity's national Zeal Award. This award is reserved for SAE's best chapter in the nation. Every chapter is evaluated using rigorous assessment metrics involving twelve areas: chapter management, recruitment, pledge education, continuing education, ritual, alumni relations, scholarship, service, financial management, risk management, housing and university relations. To qualify for the award, a chapter must score a perfect 100%. Only about five chapters in the nation do so. The Supreme Council of Sigma Alpha Epsilon then makes the final selection from those that qualify.

* Mark Cirino

Assistant Professor of English Mark Cirino is the author of a book that will be published by the University of Wisconsin Press. Cirino’s book, "Ernest Hemingway: Thought in Action," is an analysis of Hemingway’s entire career, particularly his contribution to the psychological novel.
