Katherine, Peter, and Pip the Dog retreat to their cottage in Penzance as often as possible to enjoy the cliffs of Cornwall.

The Office of Diversity Initiatives' Anti-Bias Team will be presenting a discussion - formally known as the Diversity Dialogue series. This session is meant to bring better awareness to the University of Evansville by helping students achieve an inclusive mindset through dialogue and through debunking the false stereotypes and labeling. "Just Ask Me!" is an LGBTQ discussion on how students identify. It will be a presentation for all students to attend and participate in a discussion about the LGBTQ community. It is important for students to be more familiar with LGBTQ in order to find out more about this community and how they would want to be identified. The presentation will be on Monday, October 19 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 162, Schroeder School of Business Building. All students are welcome to attend and participate in the discussion.

“Mapmaker,” an exhibit of the work of artist Katherine Baxter, will be on display at the University of Evansville’s Melvin Peterson Gallery from October 19 – December 11. Baxter will present a public lecture in the Peterson Gallery on Thursday, October 22, at 7:00 p.m., followed by a reception.

These events are part of the Emerging Contemporary Artist Lecture Series sponsored by the Efroymson Family Fund and the UE Department of Art.

Baxter lives in London, England, where she is an illustrator for newspapers, magazines and book publishing companies including The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Royal Mail, Vogue, Kingfisher Books, and Good Housekeeping Magazine. She has created private commissions for The Prince of Wales, many American schools, hospitals and universities, and the 2015 Wimbleton. Her interest in “looking at the world from above” began as a young child, and continued after studying at Bath Academy of Art. Her fascination with aerial views inspired her “jewel-like” pictorial maps of architectural vistas of cities, towns and villages all over the world.

“The challenge of creating maps still gives me a thrill and a joy,” says Baxter. “In some ways it fulfills a deep psychological need of knowing where I’m going. I like a beginning and I like a destination.”

The Melvin Peterson Gallery, located at the corner of Weinbach and Lincoln Avenues, is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from noon - 3 p.m., and Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon - 6 p.m.

Students, the deadline to cancel your UE housing contract for the spring semester is November 1. Stop by the office of residence life to cancel your housing contract without penalty for the Spring Semester if you will be:

Attending Harlaxton or Studying Abroad
Having an internship, co-op, or clinical outside of the Evansville area
Moving into a fraternity house
Transferring, withdrawing, or graduating

Requests not falling in the above categories are typically not granted. Requests to move off campus to live with friends or move into an apartment are not sufficient reasons to cancel a UE housing contract. Entering into any other housing agreement or lease with a private landlord will have no effect upon the conditions of your contract with the University of Evansville.

The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance has released a recording by Douglas Reed, University Organist Emeritus/Professor of Music/Emeritus. William Albright Organ Works was recorded on the historic Frieze Memorial Organ built in 1928 by E.M. Skinner for Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor. Administered by UM’s Block M Records, the recording is available on iTunes at https://itun.es/us/rVNz-

One of the most important American composers of organ music after 1950, William Albright (1944-1998) was born in Indiana and taught at the University of Michigan (1970-1998). He had a strong association with the University of Evansville which commissioned two major keyboard compositions from him: Four Fancies for harpsichord (1978, with the support of the Mesker Trust) and Symphony for organ (1984, with the support of the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts).

The recording project, begun in 2005 with major support from the Friends of UE Music, includes Albright’s early organ works associated with the Frieze Memorial Organ: Juba (1965), Pneuma (1966), Organbook (1967) and Organbook II (1970-71). A later work, De Spiritum (1988), calling for assistant organists and percussionists, provided opportunities for University of Evansville music majors Zachary Guenzel, Michael Kuhr, and Timothy Weisman to participate in the project. UE’s Francile MacDonald McGary portative organ, a gift of the McGary family of Newburgh, IN, was also used in the De Spiritum recording.

In addition to the FUEM grant, the project was supported by University of Michigan professors William Bolcom and Marilyn Mason; the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; and the University of Evansville Department of Music.
 

Division 1 Assistant Professor of Biology Noah Gordon recently co-authored a study with Michelle Hellman (University of Nebraska) on the regulation of reproductive timing in female treefrogs. The paper, titled: "Dispersal Distance, Gonadal Steroid Levels and Body Condition in Gray Treefrogs (Hyla versicolor): Seasonal and Breeding Night Variation in Females," can be found in the Journal of Herpetology. 

Competition continues this weekend as the University of Evansville swimming and diving teams head to West Lafayette for the Indiana Intercollegiates on Saturday.

Set or a 12 p.m. start time, the meet will feature ten swimming events as well as 1 and 3 meter dives for both the men and women. Also taking part in the meet are: Ball State (women), DePauw, UIndy, IUPUI (diving), Purdue, Rose-Hulman, Valparaiso and Wabash.

Last weekend, the Aces swam at Missouri State and have been in preparations this week for their trip to Purdue.

A pair of freshmen have been strong so far for the Purple Aces. Matt Duke ranks 8th in the Mid-American Conference in the 50 free event while his efforts so far in the 100 free rank 20th in the league.

Madison Jones has four top ten rankings in the Missouri Valley Conference. She ranks 8th in both the 200 free and 200 fly while her time in the 1000 free has her 9th in the MVC and 10th in the 100 fly.

At MSU last Friday, Evansville had several notable finishes, performing exceptionally well in the shorter distances. Michaela Kent took second place in the 50 free, posting a 25.36. The men did well in the same event, taking second through fourth place, led by Matt Duke's time of 21.78. Everett Plocek and Matt Childress followed. Kent did well in the 100 backstroke race, notching another runner-up finish at 1:00.46. Ethan O'Rourke did well in the men's 100 backstroke event, swimming a 53.94, less than a second off the victor.

Aces Tennis started the ITA Regional at Purdue University on Thursday. Day one marked the beginning of the qualifying draw round and the round featured Aces freshman Marine Darzyan in singles play along with junior Andjela Brguljan and senior Marina Moreno in the doubles draw.

Darzyan took on Hanna Sohn from the University of Memphis in her qualification draw match. Sohn was able to take the first set from Darzyan by a score of 6-2. Darzyan bounced back to take the second set by a score of 4-6 to force a third match. Sohn finished off the victory over Darzyan when she defeated her 6-2 in the third set.

In doubles play, Andjela Brguljan and Marina Moreno took on Claudia Yanes Garcia and Lidia Yanes Garcia of Austin Peay. In a tightly contested match, the Governors were able to take the victory over the Aces by a score of 8-7(5).

The Aces lone senior, Marina Moreno, will see her first singles action of the tournament on Friday when she takes on Kate Lanier of Kentucky. Match time is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start. Mareno is also most recently coming off a 5th place finish at the MVC Individual Championships when she secured a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory over Maddie Johnson of Drake.

Lastly, the freshmen duo of Marine Darzyan and Doreen Crasta will represent the Aces in doubles play. They are set to take on Laura Argente and Raquel Montvalo of Eastern Kentucky. Match time is set for 8:00 a.m. Darzyan and Crasta are most recently coming off a 8-6 defeat against Alejandra de Lasa and Ashely Thai of Bradley at the MVC Individual Championships.

A road weekend of Missouri Valley Conference action awaits the Purple Aces volleyball team as they travel to Illinois State on Friday evening before heading to Terre Haute to face Indiana State on Saturday.

Evansville hit an accurate .248 in its 3-1 loss to Southern Illinois on Saturday. Led by Genesis Miranda’s final tally of .381, the Aces were extremely efficient in the loss. It was the highest percentage the Aces hit in a 4-set loss since Sept. 3, 2011, when UE hit .270 in a 3-1 loss to Valparaiso.

In two of the last five conference matches, Genesis Miranda has notched efforts of 20+ kills, her first two times doing so against MVC foes. She is beginning to show great maturity over the last few weeks and it has resulted in UE being more competitive against strong competition. In her first 19 MVC matches, Miranda hit .134, but since then, the last five matches have seen her hit .211 with 4.11 kills per set.

Led by Stephanie Cerino’s six block assists against the Salukis, Evansville finished with a total of 9 team blocks. UE was credited with 16 block assists in the match, marking the 10th time the team has notched between 10 and 20 block assists. In those 10 matches, UE is 3-7.

The Redbirds enter Friday’s tilt with a mark of 13-6 and 3-3 in conference play. That have performed exceptionally well on their home floor, winning all five matches and are also a stellar 5-1 in neutral matchups. After starting MVC play with losses at Missouri State and Wichita State, Illinois State has won three out of four, including a 3-0 triumph over Bradley last time out. Senior Ashley Rosch is third in the Valley with 3.75 kills per match while their defensive star has been Courtney Pence, who is second in the league with 4.91 digs/set, behind only Kim Deprez.

Indiana State goes into the weekend with a mark of 13-8 and 2-4 in the league. The Sycamores opened MVC action with losses in their first two matches on the road at MSU and WSU. Since then, they have gone 2-2 with victories over UNI and Bradley. ISU has a strong 1-2 punch when it comes to serving as Carly Wishlow and Bree Spangler are third and fourth in the MVC in that department.
