The University of Evansville Fall Conference is set for Tuesday, August 18. Everyone is invited to a cookie reception, held in the Matt Williams Lobby in Shanklin Theatre at 12:30 p.m. President Kazee will address the entire campus and welcome new employees at 1:30 p.m. in Shanklin Theatre. The Fall Conference will continue with the presentation of awards and the Keynote Address by Dr. Julia Williams. The Family Picnic completes the day starting at 4:30 p.m.

As faculty, we understand well the process by which we assess students and provide them with feedback on their work; in this way, we “close the loop” in order for students to learn and improve. The same process of assessment and feedback characterizes the institutional improvement loop; by collecting and analyzing a variety of data, we can make informed decisions in order to make improvements. This workshop will focus on the multiple ways in which data can be used for continuous improvement. Program and institutional assessment processes that have been developed at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will provide models for the workshop, but the intended outcome for the workshop is to allow attendees to design evaluation plans appropriate to the University of Evansville context that can be put into action.

The GAP Program
Learn about opportunities for faculty and students to engage in cross-disciplinary real-world projects through the GAP program. A panel of faculty from across the university will be on-hand to discuss their experiences and answer questions about the program.

The Office of Admission is building a sustainable student pipeline for UE’s future. Technology and software are required in today’s Admission Office and the SLATE system is a moldable CRM that allows better utilization of UE’s limited financial resources. Those who participate in this session will see how prospective student data lives and grows and how SLATE is helping us to better serve our students.

The University of Evansville among Small Privates in the Mid-Atlantic, Southern and Mid-Western States: A Comparative Analysis – Tony Beavers SB 172
This presentation follows from a year-long study requested by the faculty senate as part of the Best Practices Task Force and which is now being continued by the senate's Market Analysis Task Force. It will consist of a comparison of UE with all small, private schools in the 20 states surrounding us with enrollments between 1,000 and 4,000 students. Among other variables tracked from recent years, the number of applicants, number accepted and number attended, SAT/ACT scores, faculty size, tuition and tuition increases, city size, and athletic costs will be considered. This analysis will be descriptive only, though all data will be made available to any member of the university community for further analysis.

The Faculty Mentor Program at the University of Evansville pursues to better facilitate and strengthen the relationship between athletic and academic lives of the University’s student athletes.  The program reinforces the University’s understanding that intercollegiate athletics are an essential core part of the mission of the University.  Faculty mentors are devoted individuals who are role models that connect with student athletes to deliver support through supplementary counsel and advice when specific issues arise, especially in the areas of social and academic matters.  Faculty mentors are committed to constructing a well-balanced connection between the academic and athletic cultures on our campus.

The overall vision of the program is to have one faculty mentor for each team.  Successful programs like this often raises the morale of both students and faculty.  Example of schools with this type of program are Naval Academy, Washington and Lee University, Bates College, and Williams College.

Employees and students or who wish to share a matter of concern or file a complaint with the university may do so by utilizing “Ace Answers.”  “Ace Answers” can be accessed via WebAdvisor and allows for comments to be officially logged at the University.  The comment will be forwarded to the appropriate department. This session will offer discussion on the importance of the process for HLC Compliance.

RACE: Racism without Racists, the New Coming Out, and Why We Don’t Want to Talk About It.

A direct conversation on race today at the university. The Diversity and Equity Officer will discuss current events, changes in how race is constructed, and how to get students talking about race by providing opportunities for dialogue.
 

The first lecture of this year’s University of Evansville Andiron Lecture Series is set for September 2. UE professor of biology Cris Hochwender will be speaking on “Sustaining Wildlife: Enhancing Native Plant Diversity at Vectren Conservation Park, in the Native Plant Garden in Koch Courtyard, and in Your Backyard.”

All the lectures in the series are at 4 p.m. in Eykamp 252 in Ridgway University Center, with a social hour at 3:45 p.m. They are free and open to the public.

The University of Evansville and Harlaxton College are pleased to welcome Holly Carter as director of Harlaxton College Programs, based in Evansville. Holly brings an extensive background as an international educator to her work with students, faculty, staff and administration at the University of Evansville and with our Harlaxton College Partners.

Her most recent position was director of International Education and Faculty Associate at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, where she oversaw a comprehensive international education operation that managed study abroad programs, provided services to international students and scholars, and supported curricular development. Her teaching areas include public health, sociology, and global studies. She holds leadership roles in international organizations including NAFSA and Habitat for Humanity International. Holly earned her PhD in Health Services Research from the University of North Texas and Master’s degrees in Public Health (UNT), Philosophy (University of Glasgow) and Social Work (University of Texas at Arlington).

“Holly’s diverse and extensive experience both in the UK and at various universities in the US will be invaluable as we continue to leverage Harlaxton College as the premier study abroad destination,” says Wes Milner, executive director of International Programs. “We are very excited to have her join the UE family this fall!”  

Reservations for the University’s guest house, the Fehn House, are now being handled through the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations. The house has four guest rooms available for short term stays and is located at 519 S. Rotherwood Avenue. Starting September 1st, the price for having guests stay at the Fehn House will be $60 per night. In support of the health and wellbeing of the campus community, the University is now Tobacco-Free. New this Fall, the use of all tobacco products and electronic smoking devices (e-cigarettes) are now prohibited at school sanctioned and/or sponsored activities or functions on campus.

The use of these products and devices is also prohibited in all University buildings, residential housing, approved University housing, rental properties, grounds, athletic facilities, parking lots, University-owned or leased vehicles, and privately owned vehicles on University grounds.

Thames & Hudson, the world's most distinguished publisher of illustrated books on art, history, and design announce the release of The Thames & Hudson Introduction to Art by Debra DeWitte, Ralph Larmann (UE Professor of Art), and Kathryn Shields.

International release of this text will take place on September 6, when it will be available everywhere outside the U.S. This text has been adopted by and recommended for preparation for the Art and Design Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR). The OCR is one of the five main examination boards used to measure qualifications for awards and achievement in subject areas in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The Thames & Hudson Introduction to Art is also available outside the UK in the many countries where Thames & Hudson distributes books. There are plans to translate the text into Korean and other languages to be announced at a later date.

This is the second text release that Larmann has been part of this year. In January the Gateways to Art AP edition was released for use by high school students who are seeking advanced placement in college art history. This hard copy version was recommended by the College Board as one of only seven texts highlighted by the organization. The original Gateways to Art text is currently the market leading art text in the world and has sold over 75,000 copies. The second edition of that text is due later this Fall.

Rania Mousa has led an interactive roundtable teaching session on the "The Usage of Board Games to Enhance Financial Accounting Knowledge" at the Annual Conference of the American Accounting Association held in Chicago, Aug. 8-12. Mousa has been assigning "Monopoly Project" as an integral component of her Financial Accounting Principles course (ACCT 210) for five years, and was proven to be a successful and enjoyable learning tool to enhance students' skills in processing basic financial information and building financial statements. The teaching session was attended by 33 accounting faculty members coming from multiple universities across the U.S. and the world. 

Director of International Studies Young KIM has recently published two articles. One entitled “Economic Transition in China and Russia” is in the European Scientific Journal. The other entitled “Institutions and Voter Turnout in the Post-Communist States” is in the Comparative Democratic Studies. 

The University of Evansville men’s soccer team opens the preseason with a home exhibition match against Bellarmine on Monday, August 17. The match will be held at Arad McCutchan Stadium and begin at 4:00 p.m. CDT.

MEDIA DAY
The UE men’s soccer team will be holding their annual Media Day prior to the match on Monday. Head coach Marshall Ray and his student-athletes will be available for interviews, audio and video. Media members are asked to meet at Arad McCutchan Stadium at 2:40 p.m. CDT.

THE OPPONENT
Bellarmine’s first exhibition match of the season will be against the Purple Aces. The Knights finished 8-8-3 last season including a 6-6-3 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

THE COACHES
Tim Chastonay is in his 18th season as head coach of BU. Evansville is guided by their first year head coach Marshall Ray.

HISTORY
UE and Bellarmine are tied 2-2 in the all-time series. The teams have not met in the regular season since the Aces claimed a 6-1 win over the Knights in 1977.

CALL FROM THE HALL
UE men’s soccer player (1985-’87) Mick Lyon was announced as a 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Famer in August. He was the 1987 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and a Second Team All-American. Lyon was also the women’s soccer head coach (1993-2001), winning nine MVC Championships.

HELPING HAND
The Purple Aces finished last season 41st in the nation with 1.50 assists per game, second in the MVC.

GUESS WHO’S BACK?
Evansville senior forward Mark Anthony Gonzalez is back this season. Gonzalez led UE in goals (6) and points (15) last season.

UP FOR THE CHALLENGE
Evansville’s schedule features three NCAA Tournament teams from last year (Indiana, Kentucky, St. Louis). The Aces will take on two teams that finished in the final RPI top 25 last season (Indiana 16, St. Louis 22) and seven in the top 100 (Bowling Green 64, Butler 68, Missouri St. 76, Mercer 86, and Lipscomb 97).

UE has 10 newcomers on this season’s team, making up 40% of the Aces roster.

NEW LEADER
The Aces have a new head coach this season, Marshall Ray. A former player (1995-’99) at UE, Ray graduated from UE in 2000 and has served on the staff for nine years with the last six as Associate Head Coach.

University of Evansville head men’s soccer coach Marshall Ray and his staff have announced the signing of Trevor Baum to begin play with the Purple Aces in the fall of 2015.

A Keller, Texas native, Baum is the son of UE men’s soccer player John Baum (’83). Trevor joins UE after transferring from South Carolina. The defender was a two time letterman in soccer for Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth, Texas, where he won two state championships in his freshman and sophomore year. Trevor was also a two time TAPPS State Champion in 2011 and 2012.

With the emergence of the USSDA, Baum was handed a tough decision in his junior year to choose between playing high school or USSDA Academy soccer. The chance to play for Solar Chelsea against some of the best club teams in the country was too hard to turn down, and it proved to be a worthwhile decision. In 2013, Baum was a member of the squad that went on be named National Runner up, in one of the most prestigious youth leagues in the USA.

“Trevor is going to provide us with some tough decisions when we are looking to put out our best back four together,” said Ray. “He has a year of experience training at the collegiate level and it has shown in training so far. We are excited to have the son of a former alumni represent our program on the field this fall. He truly knows what it means to be an Ace.”

Baum graduated high school with high honors and plans on majoring in computer engineering.

 The women’s tennis team will be holding walk-on tryout for any female student interested in join our Division I varsity tennis team. Any student who wishes to tryout must have a physical PRIOR to trying out. A free physical can be obtained on August 25, at 6:30 pm, at the Carson Center, otherwise physicals may also be performed by your individual health provider at your own cost.
