* Winter Commencement 2014

Winter Commencement 2014 is Wednesday, December 17, at 2 p.m., in the Large Gym in Carson Center. This year’s commencement speaker will be Jennie Ebeling, associate professor of archaeology, who received the 2014 Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award during May's commencement ceremony. The ceremony will be followed by a reception for the graduates and their family and friends, in the Class of 1959 Gallery and Lounge in Ridgway University Center. This event is sponsored by the UE Alumni Association.

* Baccalaureate Today in Neu Chapel

This year’s Baccalaureate ceremony will be Wednesday, December 17 at 11:00 a.m. in Neu Chapel. This interfaith service, led by University Chaplain Tamara Gieselman, is a historical way to celebrate and show thanks for lives dedicated to learning and wisdom.  Degree candidates are not required to robe for this ceremony and are asked to sit with family and friends. Café Court will be open for lunch following Baccalaureate. Graduates will receive a meal coupon via email for their meal, while the cost for lunch for their family and friends will be $7.50.

 
* Holiday Schedule Reminder

As a reminder, the University will be open on December 22, and January 2. Employees may take vacation days for those two days. The Campus will be closed for the Christmas and New Years' Holiday from December 23, through January 1.

 

What's Happening Today

* Book Buyback

The semester ending Book Buyback at the UE Bookstore begins December 10 at NOON and runs until December 17 at 5 p.m. Students are required to show their student ID and you'll get CASH on the spot. Your original receipt is not required. We also buyback books regardless of where purchased or if used on this campus or not. You can sell books back as many times as you like during the week. Special promotions during Buyback as well including a daily drawing for a $100 gift card. 

 
* Bookstore Holiday Sale

The UE Bookstore is offering 20% OFF all UE Clothing and Gift purchases December 10-17. There are also specially marked items during the week for quick clearance. Clearance items are exempt from additional discount.

* Retirement Reception for Earl Kirk this Afternoon

After over a decade of dedicated service to the University of Evansville and specifically Harlaxton College, Earl Kirk, Director of Study Abroad, is retiring. Please join us to honor Earl and thank him for his leadership at a reception TODAY - Thursday, December 18 - from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in Dunigan Lounge in the McCurdy Wing of the Schroeder School of Business Building. Info You Should Know

* Koch Center Parking Lot Closure

The Koch Center parking lot will be closed beginning late Wednesday evening, December 17, and lasting until noon on Wednesday, December 24. This closure is necessary to prepare the site for construction of the McCarthy Greenhouse. During this time, fencing and barricades will be erected to define the construction area and ingress egress lanes for equipment. The parking lot will be open for the beginning of the Spring semester, with limited capacity. Please call the Facilities office at 2775 if you have any questions or concerns. 

 
* UE Faculty/Staff Tickets

UE faculty and staff can now pick up tickets for the men's basketball games on December 18, December 21, December 28 and January 1. A ticket to this Thursday, December 18, men's game will also get you into the women's game beforehand. The Carson Center Ticket Office will be open normal business hours this week, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., and will also be open Monday, December 22 during normal business hours. The Ticket Office will be closed from December 23-25 and will reopen at 1 p.m. on December 26.

 
* Harlaxton Fall 2015 APPLY

The Office of Study Abroad is still accepting applications for Harlaxton Fall 2015. Stop by Room 261 in Schroeder School of Business Building to pick up form and course list or contact studyabroad@evansville.edu

* Priority Application Deadline for Project Impact: Guatemala study abroad program

The priority application deadline for the upcoming Project Impact: Guatemala short-term program abroad is Tuesday, December 16, 2014. The Office of Study Abroad will continue to accept applications until Friday, January 16, 2015, but interested students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to secure their place in the program.

This program consists of a semester-long course with travel to Guatemala during Spring Break 2015. Participating students will receive 3 credits and can choose from four different semester courses: BUS 350, ID 380, NURS 395, or PH 340.

Congratulations

* Beavers to Publish First Creative Fiction (Very) Short Story

Anthony F. Beavers, Professor of Philosophy, recently had his first piece of creative fiction, "A Reading from the Genesis of Twin Earth," accepted for publication. The one-page short story will appear in Mobile Robotics: Theory and Implementation by Arkapravo Bhaumik, a roboticist working on mobile robots in India. The book will be published by Taylor and Francis of London. The short story by Beavers was originally written as a provocation for a series of conference presentations on the implications of automated moral control over autonomous systems.

 

Athletics

* Oties Epps Show airs today at noon

The "Oties Epps Show" is back and will air on Tuesday, December 16 at noon.

Coach Oties Epps and sophomore forward Sasha Robinson will both appear live on the show today.

Epps and Robinson will talk about UE's last win over Oakland City, the team's three game winning streak and their upcoming set of games this weekend.

The show, hosted by Mike Radomski, airs live in the UE bookstore and can be heard on WUEV 91.5 FM. Fans can visit the UE bookstore to watch the show live and receive a 15% discount throughout the course of the show.

UE looks to extend their winning streak to four on Saturday, December 18 when they host the Troy Trojans in a 5:30 pm tip at the Ford Center. It is the first of two games that day as the Evansville men's basketball team plays Ohio University in the final contest of the doubleheader at 8:05 pm. Tickets can be purchased over the phone at 812-488-ACES (2237), in person at either the Carson Center or Ford Center ticket office, or online via Ticketmaster.com.
