Kappa Chi, a co-ed Christian service fraternity, is hosting an informal recruitment for those interested in joining. An informal recruitment meeting will be held Thursday, October 2 at 8:30 p.m. in Room 173 in the Schroeder School of Business Building.

Barbara Pierce Bush and Jenna Hager will be on campus Tuesday, October 21 as guests of the Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series. The event will take place in Eykamp Hall in Ridgway University Center at 7:00 p.m. on October 21. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. Barbara and Jenna will both share stories and insights, followed by a moderated conversation and Q&A. Cass Herrington, host and producer at WNIN 88.3, will serve as the moderator.

On Monday, October 6 at 4:00 p.m., Dr. Lisa Nikolidakis will give a talk on publishing fiction, poetry, and nonfiction in literary journals in Room 162 in Schroeder School of Business Building.

Topics covered will include how to best prepare your work, identifying where to send it, dealing with rejection, and which resources you can use to manage your submissions. After the 45-minute talk, there will be a Q&A session

The University of Evansville Department of Theatre is holding auditions for male child actors, ages 6–10, for small roles in the upcoming production of Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. Auditions will be at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 5, on the UE campus.

Actors must be available to attend occasional evening rehearsals from October 6 through Nov 13. Actors must be available for ALL performances taking place Nov. 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22 at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 16 and 23 at 2:00 p.m. and, Nov 17, 18, and 19 at 9:00 a.m.

Actors do not need to come with anything prepared, as they will be asked to read excerpts from the script.

Alumni will be on campus this weekend celebrating 50th anniversary reunions. Congratulations to the women of Zeta Tau Alpha; the Zeta Alpha chapter was founded at Evansville College in 1964 and they will celebrate this milestone at a luncheon Saturday. Members of the graduating Class of 1964 and the class of 1964 nurses will be holding special events on campus Friday and Saturday in honor of their golden anniversaries. Three University of Evansville faculty, one current student, and one alumna had entries published in the recently released encyclopedia, "The Social History of the American Family."

Mari Plikuhn, assistant professor of sociology, and James J. Berry, associate professor of anthropology, co-authored the entry "Arranged Marriage."

Mari Plikuhn and Tyler Plogher, senior psychology and sociology double-major, co-authored the entry "Demographic Changes: Zero Population Growth and Birth Rates."

Mari Plikuhn and Sarah Malik ('14, psychology and sociology), co-authored the entry "Fertility."

Robin C. Sager, assistant professor of history, authored the entries “Frontier Families” and “Westward Expansion.”

With two weekends of Missouri Valley Conference play under their belts, the Purple Aces volleyball team returns to the Carson Center this weekend for its first two home league matches of the season.

Bradley will be the first opponent of the weekend. The Aces and Braves will square off at 7 p.m. on Friday before UE welcomes Loyola to the Carson Center for a 6 p.m. match on Saturday.

Last weekend, the Aces continued Valley play at Indiana State and Illinois State. Evansville put forth a strong effort on Friday at Indiana State before falling just short in a 3-1 loss. The Aces hit .234 in the contest, finishing at the .200 mark or better for the fourth time this season. Evansville was 3-0 in the previous matches hitting .200 or better.

Freshman Cathy Schreiber has hit a team-best .312 this season, notching 107 kills in 239 attempts with 35 errors. She ranks ninth in the conference and is the no. 2 freshman in the league.

Over the course of the season, the Aces have recorded an impressive 46 solo blocks. That is 12 more than anyone else in the conference and is 27 more than its competition thus far. Just as impressive is the fact that ten different players have posted a solo block.

The Braves come to Evansville with a 0-14 mark with four of those losses coming in league action. One number stands out looking at the Braves and that is their hitting. As a team, Bradley has allowed the opposition to hit .226 while the offense has hit .105 this season.

Leading the Braves offense is Taylor Thiele, who has notched 139 kills, an average of 2.57 per set. Just behind her is Jamie Livaudais, who checks in with 104.

Loyola begins the weekend with a 5-8 mark, which includes a 1-3 MVC record. In the opening weekend, the Ramblers topped Drake by a 3-2 final with their losses coming against UNI, Missouri State and Wichita State.

With 205 kills, Morgan Reardon sits atop the conference. Her total translates to an average of 4.10 per set. Part of that success can be attributed to Caroline Holt, who leads the Valley with 10.63 assists per set.

One of the biggest events of the season for the University of Evansville cross country teams is set for Saturday as the Purple Aces travel over to Louisville for the Greater Louisville Classic.

E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park will be the host to the event, which begins with the first of several races at 8 a.m. The park played host to the 2012 NCAA Division I National Championship and will host the Division II Championship this year.

Two weeks, ago, Evansville ran at the Indiana Intercollegiates in West Lafayette, Ind. Josh Genet led the men once again, coming home in a time of 26:54.7. He came in 33rd in the Big State race while his time ranked him 51st out of 195 runners in the 8K race. Matt Hamilton finished in 37th with his final of 28:03.5. It marked his best 8K time of the season, topping his run at Eastern Illinois by 18 seconds.

Third across the stripe for the guys was sophomore Ben Woolems. He ran a 28:40.4, which was 48 seconds better than his top 8K time this season. Next up Ross Frondorf, who posted a 30:01.8, a 28-second improvement from EIU. Jon Ashby was the fifth finisher for the Aces. He ran the event in a time of 30:40.4.

Leading the women was Laurel Wolfe, who came in 26th out of 50 in the Big State contingent. She ran an 18:42.9 in the 3-mile event. This is the first three mile run for the Aces women and all times will officially count as PR's. Most events for the ladies are 5K, which equals out to 3.10686 miles.

Next up was Alyssa Moran. After leading the women at EIU, Moran came in 28th (D1) on Friday with an 18:42.2 and 40th overall

Loren Oboikovitz was third for the ladies, continuing her strong start to the season with a 19:35.9. She was 37th on the D1 list and 80th overall. Kirsten Perrey was just behind. She came in 1.2 seconds behind Oboikovitz. 

Following two stellar tournaments to begin the season, the University of Evansville women’s tennis team travels to the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship, which is set for Friday through Sunday.

Waveland Tennis Courts in Des Moines, Iowa will play host to the event. Drake University is the host.

Evansville has been strong in both singles and doubles play thus far. As a team, the Aces have won 81% of their doubles tiles and 76.7% of its singles efforts. Leading the way in doubles have been the top-flight duo of Marketa Trousilova and Marina Moreno. They have combined to go 7-0 in tournaments at SIU Edwardsville and the UE/USI Fall Invite.

In singles, the Purple Aces have been equally impressive. Freshman Kennedy Craig has had a stellar start to her collegiate career, winning all seven of her matches thus far. In her first doubles action last weekend, she teamed with Mina Milovic to go a perfect 3-0.

Three others have just one singles loss for UE, led by sophomore Andjela Brguljan. Seeing time in the third flight, Brguljan has won six out of her seven tries so far. Senior Mina Milovic has been victorious in four out of five matches while Gaby Fifer enters the tournament at 3-1.

Evansville’s top doubles team of Trousilova and Moreno have also had success in singles. Moreno, playing in the fourth flight, has had a 5-2 start to the year while Trousilova is 4-2. Natasha James has accumulated four single victories so far and teamed up with Brguljan last weekend to go 3-0 at no. 2 doubles.

The draws for the opening round are out with Trousilova slated to take on Alexa Brandt of Bradley at the top flight. James will face Gabriela Porubin of Wichita State in the second flight with Brguljan taking on Valerija Gercar of Illinois State at no. 3. Fourth flight singles will feature Moreno taking on Ekaterina Donetskova of Missouri State and Craig putting her undefeated mark against Jordan Eggelston of Drake in the fifth flight.

Fifer will compete in the sixth flight with Milovic put in the seventh for UE. Top doubles will see the Aces take on Illinois State with flight two taking on SIU and Brguljan/Craig facing Drake in the third flight.
 

Heritage Federal Credit Union honored soccer players Bronwyn Boswell and Kevin Schafer with its annual scholarship at last week’s Student-Athlete Academic Honors Breakfast.

Given out each year, the scholarship is given to a male and female who meet four specific criteria. They must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 while participating in at least 20 hours of community service for three or more non-profit service organizations.

The recipients must hold a campus leadership position and also assume a leadership role on their team, which is based on a letter of recommendation from their head coach.

Bronwyn Boswell of the women’s soccer team has earned a 3.952 GPA as a direct admit into the Physical Therapy Program. She has accumulated 40 community service hours while helping out 10 different organizations.

Mechanical Engineering major Kevin Schafer has worked hard to achieving a 3.9 GPA in his first three years. In the community, Schafer has worked 20.5 hours across eight different organizations.
