What's Happening Today

* Crescent Magazine and the LinC Information Meeting

Anyone interested in being a writer for Crescent Magazine, a photographer for the LinC or a marketing assistant or social media assistant for both publications should attend the Information Meeting at 5 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28 right outside the Student Publications office, Ridgway University Center, second floor. Writers and photographers receive academic credit for the yearlong experience. Time commitment is about 8 hours a week. No experience necessary. For more information, email tm2@evansville.edu. 

 
* UE Wind Ensemble Auditions

Auditions for UE Wind Ensemble will be held this week.

Woodwinds/Brass will audition Thursday, August 28, 3:30-10:00 pm

Sign up for an audition time on the UE Bands bulletin board across from Room 103 in the Fine Arts Building. Any UE student is eligible to audition, regardless of major.

* Audition for UE Orchestras!

Auditions for the University Symphony Orchestra and String Ensemble will be held on Thursday, August 28; and Friday, August 29. Sign-up sheets for auditions are in the Krannert Fine Arts Building, on the orchestras bulletin board across from Room 101. Upcoming Events

* Calling all Flag Football Officials!

The Intramural Department is looking for flag football officials for the upcoming season (Sept. 8-Oct. 3). There will be officials training sessions on Sunday, August 31 from 6:30 pm-8:00 pm and Monday, September 1 from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm. Training sessions will take place in Carson Center Room 113. Those interested must attend both sessions. If you are interested but cannot attend the sessions, please contact Seth Woodason (sw227) or ext. 2794. If you need on campus work ($8-10/hr) and enjoy sports, come work for the Intramural Department! 

 
* Looking for an on-campus job? Check out the Intramural Dept!

The Intramural Department will be hosting an information session on Sunday, August 31 from 6 pm-6:30 pm in Carson Center Room 113. You can earn between $8-$10 per hour officiating, score keeping, or doing administrative work for Intramurals. Students interested in officiating or score keeping Flag Football are encouraged to attend. Contact Seth Woodason at sw227@evansville.edu, at ext. 2794, or stop by the Fitness Center for any questions you have! 

 
* First Friday Event

The Student Activities Board and Greek Life will be hosting the First Friday Event on August. 29th. Starting at 7:00 pm, Greek Life organizations will be hosting fun inflateable games with carnival-style food on the front lawn of Ridgway University Center. At 9:00 pm, the Student Activities Board will host comedian Jen Kober for an hour of laughs in Eykamp Hall. These events are free to students with a current ID. 

 
* Visit UE: Admission Open House- September 6!

The Office of Admission is hosting an Open House on Saturday, September 6. If you have family members, friends, or neighbors who could benefit from a visit to campus, please encourage them to attend. They will join other prospective students from around the country in visiting with faculty members, learning about study abroad programs, discussing scholarship opportunities, touring campus including residence halls and enjoying lunch on campus. * Free Snow Cones!

Student Christian Fellowship will be giving out FREE snow cones outside of Ridgway University Center this Friday, August. 29 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. 

 
* First SCF FOCUS Large Group!

Student Christian Fellowship will be having its first FOCUS large group worship time for the semester this Friday August 29th at 6:30 pm in Grabill Lounge (basement of Neu Chapel). Everyone is welcome! 

 
* UE Anti-Bias Training Is First in U.S. Offered by ADL

The University of Evansville is offering the opportunity for students to be a part of the UE Anti-Bias Training through the generous funding of Old National Bank. The training will be offered through the Social Responsibility Certificate (SR 100-02) and will begin on Monday September 1 at 12 pm in Room 239, Graves Hall. The course will focus on prejudices such as racism, sexism, ableism and homophobia. This training is an activist approach that tries to challenge those and other prejudices. The objective is to raise awareness concerning bias and to reduce it on campus and within Southern Indiana’s school corporations.

This program is a full-year session. The first semester consists of training and education and the second semester entails presenting and serving the local population. The participants will also be offered 4 full-days of training by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and become licensed to used a curriculum specifically designed for the program for use in the local schools.

Info You Should Know

* Free Otters Tickets

The Center for Student Engagement has free Otters tickets for the UE community to enjoy for this weekend. Transportation will be provided on Saturday at 6:20 for the 6:35 p.m. home game at Bosse Field. Please show a UE ID to the Center for Student Engagement for a free ticket, plus one guest, if needed. 

 
* Meal Plan Changes

Students are able to adjust their meal plans for the fall until Wednesday, September 3 at 5:00 p.m. Adjustments can be made by going to the Dining section of the Residence Life website. http://www.evansville.edu/residencelife/mealplans.cfm

 
* Applications being accepted to the Teacher Education Program

The School of Education is accepting applications to the Teacher Education program. Education majors planning to do their internship during the Spring 2015 or Fall 2015 semesters need to apply this semester for the Teacher Education program. Internships are not possible unless students have been admitted the program. Applications are due by September 15, 2014.

To apply, go to the School of Education page on AceLink. Admission requirements, procedures and guidelines are listed on this page also. Submit your portfolio by October 15 and sign up for your interview by October 16. Interviews will be held October 27, 28, and 29. If you have questions, please visit the School of Education Office or contact your education advisor.
 

 
* Interested in Working for the Office of Admission?

Interested in working for the Office of Admission? The Office of Admission is looking for several students to work in the office this year. We are looking for energetic, friendly, customer service oriented students to call prospective students and assist the admission counselors with student interaction. Hours will primarily be in the evening with some later afternoon hours. An application and interview is required for this position. An interview will be scheduled once your application is reviewed. If you are interested in applying for one of these positions, please complete the Admission Student Worker Application that can be downloaded online. You can contact Catie Taylor (ct37@evansville.edu) in the Office of Admission with questions or for additional information. 

 
* Printing at the Library

Student printing at UE Libraries is now part of the campus-wide PAPERCUT system coordinated by Office of Technology Services. Three printers are available on Level 1 one of which offers color printouts. A color printer was funded by Student Government last academic year. Printing charges corresponds with campus-wide pricing (i.e., Monochrome at 5 cents; Monochrome Duplex at 8 cents; Color at 10 cents; Color Duplex at 18 cents). Refer your questions to OTS and UE Libraries. 

 
* Sign up for United Way's Day of Caring

Each year UE supports United Way by allowing employees to volunteer during business hours on the United Way Day of Caring. This year it is Friday, September 5 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (lunch will be provided at our site). UE employees who are interested in participating are asked to complete the volunteer form. Employees DO need supervisor approval, but are not required to take leave time to participate. UE employees will volunteer again this year with Evansville ARC on several projects. The projects are listed on the volunteer form. Please indicate your preference of projects and we will try to accommodate your choice. UE has been a proud leader in Day of Caring participation in past years.

All Day of Caring workers are invited to an early morning breakfast and program at the Old National Events Plaza in downtown Evansville before you start work from 7 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. Evansville ARC and United Way greatly appreciate your time, hard work, and willingness to serve our community. Thank you!

* Donnie Dunville Celebrates 40 years at UE

Physical Plant Maintenance Technician Donnie Dunville celebrates his 40th anniversary at UE this week. Donnie began his employment and service with the University on August 26, 1974. Over the years Donnie has worked in every building on campus. He currently is assigned to Morton, Brentano and Moore Halls. In addition to working for the University, Donnie donates his free time to many campus and community organizations. Congratulations Donnie and Thank You! 

 
* Creative Writing Majors Published in New Anthology

Creative writing majors Jane Friedman ‘98, Johanna Gohmann ’98, and Jessica Russell-Pope ’13, have all had essays included in a new anthology, Every Father’s Daughter, to be published in the spring of 2015 by McPherson & Company, New York.

UE Professor of Creative Writing Margaret McMullan and Columbia University Professor Phillip Lopate edited and wrote introductions for Every Father’s Daughter, a collection of personal essays about fathers written by contemporary women writers such as Nobel laureate Alice Munro and Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley. Other contributors include Joyce Maynard, Ann Hood, Lee Smith, Jill McCorkle, Antonya Nelson, Bobbie Ann Mason, Jayne Anne Phillips, Alexandra Styron, and Maxine Hong Kingston.

UE creative writing major Jessica Russell-Pope ’13 also served as copyeditor for the manuscript during her senior year Independent Study with Professor McMullan.

Professor McMullan and Professor Lopate taught together in 1993, when Professor Lopate came to UE as a visiting writer. Professor Lopate currently directs the MFA program in Creative Nonfiction at Columbia University in New York. Professor McMullan is the Melvin M. Peterson Endowed Chair in Literature and Writing.

In April, Professors McMullan and Lopate will host a panel event at the AWP in Minneapolis, MN with readings from anthology contributors Joyce Maynard, Ann Hood, Jayne Anne Phillips and Jill McCorkle.

* Evansville Basketball to Hold Fundraiser Aug. 30

On Saturday, August 30, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team will hold a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings on Green River Road in Evansville.

All day on Saturday, present the coupon linked above to your server and 10% of your bill will go towards supporting the Aces men’s basketball program. While the coupon is good for the full day, stop by at 2:30 p.m. and join the basketball staff for a watch party as the U.S. Men’s National Team takes on Finland in the FIBA World Cup of Basketball.

Buffalo Wild Wings is located at 715 North Green River Road on the east side of Evansville. It is in the shopping plaza directly across from Eastland Mall.
