One day after Cody Fick was chosen in the 23rd round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the Phillies picked left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland in the 35th round. Freeland, a standout at Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, Colo., signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball at the University of Evansville on November 16, 2010. The hurler owned a 7-2 record in his senior season with a 1.44 earned run average, 121 strikeouts, and just 14 walks. Negotiations will be in the works between the high school senior and the Philadelphia Phillies. Freeland would be a scholarship player for the Aces if he chooses to put off professional baseball for the time being.
