* Wood Qualifies for U.S. Public Links Championship

University of Evansville golfer Griffin Wood gets to experience the beautiful and challenging Bandon Dunes Resort in Bandon, Ore. next month, thanks to his play last weekend at the Amateur Public Links Sectional.

Wood qualified for the USGA's U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship for the second year in a row by winning the APL Sectional on Sunday at Cambridge Golf Course in Evansville with a 36-hole score of 145.   He defeated Ball State's Tyler Merkel by one stroke and UE teammate Andrew Luo by three.

Wood will join approximately 150 of the nation's best amateurs June 27 to July 2 at Bandon Dunes, where they will play the Bandon Trails and Old Macdonald courses.  Bandon Trails opened in 2005 and Old Macdonald opened last year.  Bandon Dunes Resort includes four world-acclaimed golf courses, and is located on the Pacific coast in southern Oregon.

Wood, a rising senior at the University of Evansville, is on target to produce UE's third lowest career stroke average since 1990.  He was UE's number two man overall with a 74.30 average in 2010-11, and was number one by a wide margin in the spring with a 73.92 average.  Wood finished ninth out of 45 golfers at the MVC Championship (78-74-78=230) in April, and has now finished 20th, 16th and 9th in his three MVC tournaments.

University of Evansville softball players Jen Stahlhut and Allison Aguilera were named to the 2011 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team, as announced by the league's office today. Stahlhut earned first team recognition, marking the first time since 2008 that a Purple Ace has been named to the first team, while Aguilera was named honorable mention.

Stahlhut capped off her senior season ranked in the MVC's Top-15 in several offensive categories, including a fourth place standing in total doubles with 13 two-baggers overall. Making a mark in UE's all-time record books, the Troy, Ill., native leaves UE ranked third with 49 career doubles, fourth with 285 total bases, and fifth with a .465 career slugging percentage. Including her 2011 All-MVC second team award, Stahlhut has received all-conference honors the past three seasons and was named to the all-tournament team in 2010.

Stahlhut is a three-time member of the MVC Honor Roll and was named as an MVC Scholar-Athlete honorable mention in 2010. Earlier this month, she was one of nine Valley players announced to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District team. Stahlhut holds a grade point average of 3.71 and is currently pursuing her master's degree in health service administration.

Making her first appearance on an MVC Scholar-Athlete team, Aguilera finished her junior year tied for 11th in the MVC with six double plays fielded during Valley play. A product of Crown Point, Ill., Aguilera ended the season hitting .220 and led the Aces with 24 pinch-hit appearances this season. Taking an active role her community, Aguilera was honored during National Student-Athlete day for tallying more than 10 community service hours while maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or better. The infielder also serves as a board member and representative on UE's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). * Aces Add Canadian Golfer

Coach Jim Hamilton announced today that Quinn Vilneff of Amherstburg, Ontario will join the University of Evansville golf team for the 2011-12 season.  A transfer from Niagara University, Vilneff was Niagara's top finisher in all four tournaments in which he played last season.  Vilneff was ranked ninth among all junior golfers in Ontario last year.  He was chosen as the Windsor Essex County Sports Person of the Year in golf, and earned the Outstanding Academic Athlete of the Year award at St. Thomas of Villanova High School as a senior.  Vilneff was medalist at a Canadian Junior Golf Association tournament last summer, and tied for third place in a field of 161 golfers at the Optimist International 2010 tournament.

"Quinn is an outstanding student, a fine golfer, and has a real passion for the game," Hamilton said.  "He has had an outstanding junior career, and I think he will be an immediate contributor to our team."

Vilneff joins a University of Evansville golf program that returns all of its players from 2010-11.  Last season's squad won two tournaments in the fall, defeating 10 other teams at the Butler Invitational and 12 others at the Dayton Invitational.
