* Margaret McMullan

Congratulations to Department of Creative Writing Professor Margaret McMullan whose introduction to Vanished by the Danube: Peace, War, Revolution, and Flight to the West by Charles Farkas was recently published by State University of New York (SUNY) Press. President Bill Clinton says it's "Evocative...Farkas pays tribute to the simple elegance of his native country in the years preceding WWII, while never sparing us the truth about the horrors to come. In his story we are reminded that resourcefulness and optimism can prevail even in the face of great struggle." Professor McMullan was a 2010 Fulbright Professor at the University of Pécs in Pécs, Hungary and currently holds the Melvin Peterson Endowed Chair in Literature and Writing.

Athletics

* Five UE Student-Athletes Earn MVC Award

Five University of Evansville student-athletes were recently honored at the senior banquet as recipients of the Missouri Valley Conference Presidents Council Academic Excellence Award.

Included in the honorees were Sam Cobb (men’s golf), Chelsea Falkenstein (women’s basketball), Jill Enge (women’s swimming and diving), Jordan Van Wyk (women’s swimming and diving) and Kepra McBrayer (women’s cross country).  The group received their awards at the UE senior banquet, which was held on Saturday, May 4.

The purpose of the award is to recognize the elite academic achievements of graduating senior student-athletes.  In order to be recognized, the student-athlete must meet three requirements including: a minimum GPA of 3.8, participation in athletics for at least two years (not necessarily a letterwinner) and must be within 18 hours of graduation at the time the award is received.

* Men's Basketball Signs Christian Benzon

University of Evansville head men’s basketball coach Marty Simmons has announced the signing of Christian Benzon to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Purple Aces beginning next season.

A native of Denmark, Benzon has played in high school as a Danish exchange student at The Rock School in Gainesville, Fla.  The 6-4, 195 guard served as the team captain for head coach Justin Harden in both his junior and senior seasons.

“It is great to add a player of Christian’s ability to our team,” UE head coach Marty Simmons said.  “We are very excited about what he gives us. He is a very explosive slashing guard. He has great speed to run the wing and along with that can handle the ball very well. He has a tremendous motor and will play multiple positions for our team.”

Benzon led his team in scoring in his first two years at The Rock before taking on a defensive role, averaging 10 points as a senior.  His performance in his final season helped him to be named to the 2012-13 Independent All-State Second Team.  In 2010, Benzon played for Denmark in the U18 European Championships where he saw action in seven games while averaging 15.3 points per contest.  He posted efforts of 26 points versus Luxembourg and 22 against Israel.

He joins a 2013 freshman class that also includes Jaylon Brown (Fishers, Ind.), Duane Gibson (Cleveland, Ohio) and Blake Simmons (Newburgh, Ind.).

“We are extremely excited about all the guys we signed earlier in the year, Christian only adds to that excitement,” Simmons continued.  “Not only are they talented but they are terrific young men that will represent the University of Evansville in a first class manner.”

* Aces To Host 2013 MVC Women's Soccer Championship

Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Doug Elgin has announced the host sites for the 2013-14 sports championships and the University of Evansville has been selected as the host for the 2013 MVC Women’s Soccer Championship.

Arad McCutchan Stadium will host the tournament, which is slated to take place from November 8-10, 2013.  The top six teams out of the seven in the league advance to the championships while the top two seeds receive a bye in the first round.

“We are very excited about being able to host the tournament on our field,” UE head coach Krista McKendree said.  “We have not done it since 07, so it will be a good challenge for us to see if we can play good enough soccer all year long to earn a spot in the tournament.  It will be another competitive year in the Valley and we look forward to what will be a great weekend.”

All games in the opening round are played on campus sites while the semifinals will take place in Evansville on Friday, Nov. 8 with the championship set to be played two days later.  The Purple Aces had an outstanding season in 2012, going 4-1-1 in the MVC en route to the regular season championship.

Evansville is no stranger to hosting major soccer tournaments as UE has played host to more postseason soccer tournaments than any other school in the MVC, including 12 NCAA Tournament matches.

This will mark the fourth time UE has hosted the women’s soccer championship.  The other three times were in 1996, 1998 and 2007.  The men’s soccer championship has also been played in Evansville on three occasions with the last coming in 2008.  Women’s golf was the last championship to be hosted by the Purple Aces.  The 2010 MVC Tournament was held at Rolling Hills Country Club in Newburgh from April 18-20, 2010.
