UE SAAC and Hacienda Give Back Fundraiser for Derek Melton

Derek Melton was an honorable-mention all-Missouri Valley Conference baseball player at UE in 2008, until he was left paralyzed due to a neck injury after a swimming accident. A year and a half later, he is still fighting to try and regain movement, and UE's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) would like to help him by raising funds for his medical expenses. They have teamed with Hacienda on Green River Road to have a Give Back Fiesta, where 20 percent of all sales (with a Hacienda Gives Back Fiesta token) on Feb. 2 will go to Melton's cause.

To participate, print off the Hacienda Gives Back Fiesta flyer on GoPurpleAces.com and clip out the Gives Back token on the bottom of the page. Then take the token to the Hacienda Restaurant location at 990 South Green River Road in Evansville. When you present your server with the Gives Back token after the meal, Hacienda will donate 20 percent of the meal cost to Melton's cause.

This Week in Music

A dozen department faculty members and two guest artists will perform a wide range of instrumental and vocal compositions by Barber, including the second movement of Barber's String Quartet, better known in its string orchestra arrangement, Adagio for Strings, and one of Barber's best-known vocal works, Dover Beach. Additionally, Assistant Professor of Music History John Jordan will offer brief remarks on Barber's life and career, as well as the performed works. The concert will occur in Wheeler Concert Hall and is free and open to the public.

Julia Zuber Named UE February Employee of the Month

Student Accounts Clerk Julia Zuber has been named the February Employee of the Month. Julia came to work at UE in 1994 and has been an integral part of the Student Accounts office staff for over a decade.

She received her Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree from the University in 2007.

Those nominating Julia praised her for her warm and friendly personality, her helpful attitude and calm, professional manner.

"Julia is one of the most pleasant and hardworking people on campus. The entire campus community, along with our students and parents, find her to be friendly and always approachable. Her ability to put people at ease is an invaluable skill, especially when dealing with sensitive money matters."

"Julia treats every 'customer' with complete courtesy and respect. She is always very professional."

"A good example of Julia's extraordinary efforts on behalf of our students and alum is that she looks up the degree earned on every single former student who is requesting loan consolidation just to make sure they did not earn a degree where loan cancellation might be an option. The University is under no obligation to this. The good will generated by her cannot be measured."

Quilts on Permanent Display at the Libraries

Ten quilts were re-hung at the UE Libraries in early January 2010 following cleaning and extensive preparation. Quilts are on permanent display on Levels 1 and 3 as an interior design element. Most of the quilts were handmade by Amish craftswomen utilizing typical Amish designs and colors.

Amish quilts were originally displayed with the opening of the Bower-Suhrheinrich Library in 1986.

One quilt created by students and faculty of Evansville College between 1939 and 1943 is a new addition. This special quilt which now hangs on Level One was the result of a three-year effort by Ms. Marcella (Horny) Stein when she was a student. Ms. Stein recently donated this quilt to UE and its Libraries. UE Libraries recognizes the important efforts of eleven local quilters who are members of the Raintree Quilters Guild. Guild members cleaned and repaired quilts, and they prepared the quilts for re-hanging which will preserve these artworks for years to come. Raintree Quilters Guild members are Dena Bauer, Linda Bohlen, Mary Brass, Jeanne Ethridge, Anita Johnson, Terry Mominee, Judy Morton, Sylvia Priola, Darlene Robinett, Kathy Scheller, and Judy Streetman. Special thanks are also deserved by UE Facilities which prepared new hardware to re-hang all the quilts and also hung the quilts. Three new Amish quilts are currently being prepared for display in February.

Enjoy these quilt artworks each time you visit the Libraries. Additional information on quilts at the Libraries is available at:
http://libraries.evansville.edu/blog/ and http://libraries.evansville.edu/tour/quilts.html.
